Way back in March, Google began updating Nexus 6 devices to Android 7.1.1 Nougat. Following the discovery of a number of bugs, the update was subsequently, disappointingly, pulled, plonking Nexus 6 owners back on Android 7.0 (unless they opted to soldier on with the unstable 7.1.1 build).

Now, Google has released a new and seemingly solid version of Android 7.1.1 Nougat for the Nexus 6.

The ~368 MB update, which was spotted by Android Police, is currently being rolled out to the Nexus 6 over-the-air. Though users running Android 7.0 should be able to upgrade without a hitch, anybody who stayed on the original Android 7.1.1 build for the Nexus 6 will have to revert back to the original update track before getting the latest software (it can't be applied on top of it).

Why would Google make the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 look so different?

This will be the last official update, outside of perhaps a few more security patches, that the Nexus 6 will ever receive, but it had a good run. The handset is now receiving almost the latest version of Android (it won't receive Android 7.1.2, which introduced only some minor changes) despite that it was released in 2014. There are still flagship phones from this year that don't have Android 7.1.1, so it's another firm reason to consider buying a Google-branded device (don't forget that the Google Pixel 2 is on the horizon).

Android 7.1.1 is something of a minor upgrade to Android 7.0, with its main features being launcher shortcuts and the smart storage manager. If you're interested, you can read more about what else it includes here.

Those still rocking a Nexus 6 should look out for the update notification from today.
