The Huawei Mate 9 is a great device that hasn't quite grabbed as much attention on the market as a lot of its rivals. This year, Huawei plans on changing that with its successor. Once again, the Mate 10 will fall into the phablet territory thanks to its large screen and will go head to head with the likes of the Galaxy Note 8 , LG V30, and the upcoming Google Pixel 2 XL, among other devices.
Huawei has confirmed that just like last year, we can also expect to see the Pro version of the upcoming Mate 10 smartphone. Will it be a China-exclusive model just like its predecessor? Well, anything is possible at this point, as Huawei hasn't shared any info on this topic yet. However, the fact that the Mate 10 Pro will actually be revealed in Europe makes us think that the phablet should be available on the old continent and possibly even in the US.

To have any chance of truly sparking consumer interest and competing against the smartphones mentioned above, the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro have to bring quite a few new things to the table. Just having the top-of-the-line specs doesn't cut it in this day and age, which means Huawei will have to focus more on design, price, and unique, signature features that would make the smartphones stand out from the crowd.
In this post, we take a closer look at the likely Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro specs, features, and design, to give you a better idea of what to expect.
Keep in mind that most of the things you'll read down below are rumors for now, as they haven't been confirmed by Huawei yet. As usual, the company likely won't reveal any specific details about the upcoming smartphones prior to their reveal.

Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro: Specs
Just like its predecessors, the Mate 10 will feature high-end specs that should be right up there with the best smartphones on the market. In an interview with Bloomberg, Richard Yu, the CEO of Huawei's Consumer Business Group, shared a few details about the upcoming device. He said that the Mate 10 will be more powerful than Apple's upcoming flagship, and also added that we can expect to see a much longer battery life, a "full-screen display", quicker changing speeds, improvements in the camera department, and many other features.
Starting with the screen, rumors out of China claim that the device will feature a 6-inch "Full Active" LCD display with a resolution 2,160 x 1,080 pixels that will be made by Japan Display. For comparison, the one on the Mate 9 is slightly smaller at 5.9-inches and has a Full HD resolution.
The display is said to be bezel-less so to speak with an aspect ratio of 2:1, just like the one on the LG G6, Samsung Galaxy S8 (sort of), and a few other handsets. This will make the Mate 10 slightly taller as well as a bit narrower when compared to your average smartphone.
Huawei's upcoming phablet will be powered by the Kirin 970 chipset, which has been confirmed by the company's CEO. Unfortunately, there's no word on the amount of RAM yet. However, we think that the smartphone might have 4 GB of RAM like its predecessor, or either 6 GB like some of its main rivals, which seems more likely at this point.
Of course, we also expect to see a dual-camera setup on the back of the Mate 10. This has recently been confirmed by Huawei Australia with a tweet that also took a shot at the Galaxy Note 8. It basically welcomed the Samsung device to the dual-camera family, something that the Chinese manufacturer has been making use of since April 2016 with the Huawei P9 series. The image posted also includes the upcoming Mate 10, with the #beyondthegalaxy hashtag on top.

As usual with Huawei's high-end devices, we can expect to see a Leica-branded RGB/monochrome camera setup on the back. According to a teaser video released by the company (see below), the setup will feature a 12 and 20 MP sensors, just like the Mate 9.
What's also interesting is that some rumors claim the device will be equipped with two cameras on the front, just like the Oppo F3 and a few other smartphones. This would make the Mate 10 popular among selfie lovers, allowing them to capture those fancy bokeh photos.
The battery is said to remain the same at 4,000 mAh and should support Huawei's Super Charge technology. Although the battery's capacity won't get upgraded, the battery life should be better when compared to the Mate 9 if the new chipset proves to be more energy-efficient than its predecessor. Other rumors also point to a facial recognition feature, up to 128 GB of storage, and a microSD card slot.
The Mate 10 Pro, on the other hand, is expected to be similar to the Mate 10 in terms of specs. The smartphone will be powered by the Kirin 970 chipset, and we also expect it to be equipped with the same dual-camera setup.
However, it will definitely be a bit more powerful than the Mate 10, similar to the relationship the Mate 9 Pro had to the Mate 9 introduced last year. Both devices have the same processor, but the Pro version arrived with a higher resolution (QHD rather than Full-HD) curved display and an option with more RAM and internal storage space. The story might be similar this year, although nothing has been confirmed yet.
Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro: Software
Last year's Mate 9 launched with Android 7.0 Nougat on board along with a new version of Huawei's user interface, EMUI 5. Therefore, we expect the Mate 10 series to run the recently announced Android 8.0 Oreo with an upgraded version of its UI, likely to be called EMUI 6.
The latest version of Android brings quite a few new features to the table, which you can read all about here. What exactly we can expect to see from EMUI 6, unfortunately, isn't known at this time. Huawei's user interface is quite heavy, so to speak, but has improved with each new version. With EMUI 5, for example, you can enable the app drawer, which wasn't possible in previous versions. There are also quite a few customization options available, which are always good to have.
That being said, EMUI definitely isn't the most popular skin out there, as it does change the look and feel of Android quite a bit. It kind of tries to imitate Apple's iOS in a few ways, which some love while other hate.
The software experience is extremely important to users, and Huawei has to step up its game in this department to make the Mate 10 series and other future devices more appealing to users. OnePlus has been doing a great job in this department with its light OxygenOS user interface offering a bunch of customization options that don't get in the way if you don't want to use them. Lenovo, on the other hand, has decided to ditch its Vibe Pure UI, meaning all of its upcoming smartphones will feature stock Android. Although we don't expect Huawei to do the same thing, a lighter UI would be nice, which would also help the company push out updates faster.
Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro: Design
Unfortunately, we haven't seen any official images of the Mate 10 series yet, but have heard a few design rumors and come across a couple of fan-made renders that might help us figure out what the smartphones will look like.
Although the upcoming phablets are expected to come with slightly larger displays than their predecessors, they will likely have a smaller footprint. Huawei has confirmed that the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro will be the company's first full display smartphones, meaning that they will have extremely thin bezels like the Essential Phone and a few other devices. Rumors claim that their screen-to-body ratio will be even higher than that of the Galaxy S8, so more than 83.6 percent.
Opting for a bezel-less design is definitely the way to go for Huawei, as it will make the large devices a bit more compact. Also, because the Note 8 and the V30 feature thin bezels, Huawei has no choice but to go down the same road to remain competitive.
Just like on its predecessor, the Mate 10's fingerprint scanner will likely be located on the back of the device, below the cameras. Although we have heard rumors that Huawei might opt for an in-display scanner, that probably won't happen. The technology reportedly isn't quite ready yet, which is why Samsung hasn't used it on the Note 8. And just like last year's model, the Mate 10 is expected to feature a metal body with a curved back that should make it sit better in the hand.
Again, we haven't seen any official images of the device yet, but we have come across a concept video and a few renders made by Huawei's fans based on the latest rumors. Check them out below.
However, it's worth pointing out that the Mate 10 Pro might not look exactly the same as the Mate 10. What differences can we expect to see is anyone's guess right now. Last year's Mate 9 Pro, for example, has the fingerprint scanner on the front, while the standard version has it on the back, as already mentioned above. Another difference between last year's Mate smartphones is that the Pro version has a curved screen, while the Mate 9 features a more standard flat display.
These two things make the Mate 9 and 9 Pro somewhat different from one another in terms of design. However, the story might be a bit different this year. If the upcoming smartphones won't have the same design, the differences between them probably won't be quite as big.
The reason for this is that both Mate 10 smartphones will likely have the fingerprint sensor on the back, as there's just won't be enough room on the front because of the thin bezels. This means that the front parts of the two smartphones should be more or less identical, while the back could be a bit different.
So, there you have it. These are all the rumors we have come across so far regarding the specs, features, and design of the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro. We'll update this page as soon as we hear more.
