Mobile game developer Nerial has announced that the sequel to its Google Play Indie Games contest winner Reigns will launch on the Google Play Store, iOS App Store and PC (via Steam) on December 9th.
Alongside the release date, publisher Devolver Digital shared a new trailer for Reigns: Her Majesty that clues us into a few expanded gameplay features and offers a small sample of the bizarre conundrums we'll be facing in our second stint on the throne.
As the name suggests, this follow-up to 2016's celebrated medieval strategy title puts players in the royal shoes of a ruling queen with one simple goal: remain in power for as long as you possibly can.
Reigns: Her Majesty builds on the card-based mechanics of the first game which lets you respond to a variety of royal requests by swiping left or right. Just like Tinder, only this time you'll be picking between who does and doesn't get to eat for a bit while you plan your next blood-soaked conquest.
Like before, to maintain a happy kingdom you'll have to balance the needs of the game's religious order, your military, the treasury, and your royal subjects, which is a lot harder than it initially sounds.
As an example, the trailer shows the player burning at the stake after being accused of treason and witchcraft by a disillusioned Cardinal. The final release will no doubt revel in the countless other ways the UK-based studio has thought up to bring each new monarch's rule to a grisly end.
As well as hundreds of fresh cards and dozens of new characters, Reigns: Her Majesty also adds an inventory system where you can store various valuable trinkets that may or may not lead to your eventual demise, depending on who you choose to give them to.
There are also brand new Royal Challenges that task you with fulfilling certain goals that range from noble achievements like "discover a new world", to more quirky accomplishments like "restore the mechanical owl".
Nerial has yet to announce pricing for Reigns: Her Majesty, but if it's anything like the first game you should be able to pick it up for a reasonable price and not have to deal with any in-app purchases.
