Welcome to the 229th Android Apps Weekly! Here are the biggest headlines from the last week:
- Google removed over 700,000 apps from the Google Play Store in 2017. The biggest reason was the violation of the Play Store's policies. 250,00 were for copyright reasons. Many were due to security concerns like the AdultSwing malware. Additionally, Google removed 99% of the problem apps before anyone installed them. Good job Google! Thank you for keeping us safe.
- Google also launched its Google Assistant Go app this week. It follows the trend of other Go apps. The app is mostly for low end devices with lesser specs. It is missing some features compared to the full version, such as reminders, hands-free activation, and a few others. Still, it's a way to get Assistant into the hands of people with less powerful devices.
- Tekken Mobile soft launched in Canada this week. The hype for this one is pretty incredible with over 1.5 million pre-registrations so far. We also learned about more release dates along with the soft launch. The game should launch around February 15th in Europe and in the U.S. on March 1st. This is probably going to be a candidate for game of the year.
- YouTube TV continues its fervent march this week. They released official apps for Apple TV and Roku this week. This is a valuable release for the company. It brings them closer to parity with several Internet TV services. The apps reportedly work pretty well as well. YouTube TV's biggest weakness is lack of platform support. They closed that door a little bit this week with these releases.
- Nintendo confirmed a mobile Mario Kart this week. Unfortunately, there aren't many details about it right now except its name: Mario Kart Tour. The announcement came from a Tweet back on January 31st. The tweet also mentioned a release date sometime in the next fiscal year. Nintendo released both premium (pay once) and freemium apps before. This release could go either way. Either way, consider us hyped.

Onmyoji is a new online competitive game. It boasts a large user base. However, the Android launch was only here recently. The game features online PvP with turn-by-turn mechanics. You also get guilds, boss fights, a bit of story, and a decent soundtrack. This is about as typical of a freemium game as it gets these days. However, like most freemium games, you can play for a while before in-app purchases become a problem. It's okay for what it is.
Notarize is a unique new app. It lets you notarize documents quickly. The app works by letting you video call with a licensed notary. You prove your identity, upload your file, and the notary does the rest. The app also includes document scanning functionality, The service is from Virginia. However, it's perfectly legal in any state that allows out-of-state notaries. The app is free. However, actually notarizing a document does cost money.

Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia is the latest game from Square Enix. It features mechanics from the popular Dissidia franchise. You build parties from various Final Fantasy games much like Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. The game also features a decently long story, turn by turn combat, and enough Final Fantasy fan service for long time fans. This one also features online co-op with your friends. It had a bit of a rocky start. However, it should be fairly popular among the Final Fantasy fan base at least. It's also a freemium game.
Cake Web Browser is a unique new web browser. It generally works like most others. You surf the web, load web pages, and all of that stuff. It does handle search a little differently, though. It auto-loads web pages from your search. You can thumb through them very similarly to Google's AMP. It won't supplant the more powerful browsers like Firefox, Chrome, Opera, etc. However, it is something a little simpler and different for those who want it. The app is also free with no in-app purchases. It may have advertising, though.
Game Dev Tycoon made its rounds with the popular YouTube gamer circle some time back. It now has its own mobile game. It plays basically like the PC version. You design games, gain experience, earn money, and all kinds of other stuff. It takes place in the 1980's. You also have some control over the games you make. The game has an impossibly unsustainable 5.0 rating after 1,300 reviews. This may be another early candidate for game of the year. It currently runs for $4.99 with no in-app purchases.
