Introduction

Huawei wasn't the first maker to use a dual-camera setup with the P9, but that's what became the spark of the multiple-camera revolution. The P10 series brought in the second generation Leica snapper and now the P20 is here, aiming to put Huawei in the lead of the camera race.

The company introduces two new models this year - the Huawei P20 and P20 Pro, both with notable notched screens. The regular P20 build on the successful P10 formula, while the P20 Pro is the carrier of the new jaw-dropping Leica Triple Camera.

The P series has become popular of spearheading Huawei's latest camera innovations and that continues with the P20 Pro. The new triple camera focuses on all-round professional-grade experience via a new 40MP RGB sensor, an 8MP telephoto one, and a 20MP monochrome snapper. In combination with AI, Huawei promises 5X hybrid lossless zoom, tripod-free long-exposure shots, high-quality low-light shots and up to ISO 102,400 support. There's also 960fps slow-mo to catch up with Sony and Samsung.

Meanwhile the P20 inherits the P10 Leica Dual Camera, but adds brighter f/1.6 lenses, larger sensors, new background effects, smarter scene recognition and EIS stabilization for videos.

The P20 duo will be keeping the Kirin 970 chip, but that was to be expected. The Mate series are usually pioneering the new chipsets and the next Mate won't be coming for at least another six months.

One thing that all the leaks revealed, and many will remember about the new P20, is the signature Twilight color. The gradient color option is immediately recognizable and one of the catchiest paintjobs we've seen in a while. Huawei really got that right this year and managed to make the dual-glass design interesting again.

Huawei P20 and P20 Pro hands-on review

There are tons of new features on the Huawei P20 and P20 Pro. We have spent some time with those two and we are ready to share our first impressions with you.

Huawei P20 hands-on

It's tough to be the sensible option and not to pack the series' most advertised feature - the Triple Camera. Yet, the Huawei P20 is keeping its cool, looks fresh and has a lot of improvements to show off. If it's a worthy upgrade is a question for our review, now we'll just focus on what's new.

Huawei P20 and P20 Pro hands-on review

The new dual-glass design reinforced with a metal frame is not something unseen, but Huawei did a good job making it unique with the new Twilight color. The moment you see that gradient you know that's a P20. The rest of the paintjobs are quite attractive, too, but the Twilight is what people will remember this generation for.

Both pieces of glass are trendily curved, matching nicely with the frame's chamfers. The metal is polished so don't expect some impressive grip - the P20 is as slippery as it looks. It's IP53 rated for moderate dust and splash resistance.

Behind the front glass sits a big 5.8" LCD, but the P20's body didn't grow bigger since the P10. Huawei has trimmed the bezels and made the screen taller - thus the increased diagonal to 5.8" and the vertical resolution from 1,920 up to 2,244 pixels. It's a notched screen, for better or worse, but the notch itself is smaller than the iPhone's.

The front-mounted fingerprint scanner is here to stay - it's an always-on one and can be used for navigation via various gestures. On the opposite side of the screen sit a circular grille for the earpiece and the brand new 24MP selfie camera and its f/2.0 lens. The earpiece is not centered, which may look odd to some. It does, however, double as a second speaker in a hybrid stereo setup, Mate 10 style.

The front snapper has some Leica involvement, but the important thing is it has autofocus, and supports a bunch of different background effects.

Huawei P20 and P20 Pro hands-on review

The back is where things get a little bit more interesting - there is one very familiar hump with a vertical orientation. That's a first for the P-series - until the P20 - all cameras were flush with the body.

The P20's setup has two sensors behind f/1.6 lenses - a 12MP RGB and a 20MP monochrome. There is also a dual-tone LED flash with a new color temperature sensor. Thanks to some new cool AI features this camera is more capable than the setup seen on the Mate 10 and P10, but we are yet to see those promising effects and stabilizations in action.

The P20 phones will come with a hybrid SIM slot. There is no audio jack on either P20s though.

The P20 is powered by a sealed 3,400 mAh battery and it supports Huawei' proprietary Super Charge with a 22.5W adapter. The battery capacity is a small increase over the P10's 3,200mAh, but we appreciate it anyways.

Huawei P20 and P20 Pro hands-on review

The P20 will launch in Twilight, as well as Black, Ping Gold, Midnight Blue and Champagne Gold. Those would probably vary by region, but the Twilight option should make it to every single market.

Huawei P20 Pro hands-on

The P20 Pro retires the Plus moniker Huawei used to mark its bigger flagships. And while Pro was mostly about the screen on the Mates, it's all about the camera on the P20.

Huawei P20 and P20 Pro hands-on review

The Huawei P20 Pro isn't much bigger than the regular model - it has a 6.1" LCD notched screen of the same 1080p resolution. That 0.3" difference in screen size doesn't make the Pro a whole lot larger since we are talking very tall 18.7:9 displays here. It also shares the PenTile RGBW matrix with the P20 and the Huawei Mate 10 before it.

The front is pretty much identical to the P20, housing the same impressive 24MP selfie shooter and a small circular earpiece. Also doubling as a speaker.

Huawei P20 and P20 Pro hands-on review

The front-mounted fingerprint scanner stays on the Huawei P20 Pro, too. The dual-glass design is the current

flagship trend, including those curvy corners and edges, but once again it's the rad Twilight color that makes the P20 Pro stand out. It's more impressive still on the slightly larger phone.

Huawei P20 and P20 Pro hands-on review

The triple camera premieres on the Huawei P20 Pro's back and it's all new territory here. The outside sensor is the 20MP monochrome snapper with f/1.6 bright lens and promises exceptional dramatic shots at night. Then, the there's a huge 1/1.7" 40MP color sensor behind f/1.8 lens and an 8MP telephoto snapper with f/2.4 lens.

Huawei P20 and P20 Pro hands-on review

Huawei supplies 4-way autofocus technique to help those cameras, OIS, and a new dual-tone flash with an embedded color temperature sensor to tune your low-light pictures properly. But we'll talk more about this marvelous piece of hardware in a minute.

The Pro also packs a large 4,000 mAh battery, a capacity larger than most flagships these days.

Huawei P20 and P20 Pro hands-on review

Handling the P20 Pro is a real pleasure, though it's as slippery as any other glass phone. It has a better IP67 dust and water protection than the P20, so at least you won't have to worry about getting this one wet.

Leica Dual and Leica Triple cameras

Huawei P20

The Huawei P20 has the same dual-camera setup we saw on the Huawei Mate 10 - the Leica Dual Camera v.2.0 Pro. This means we're looking at a 12MP OIS color and a 20MP monochrome imager sitting behind f/1.6 lenses each.

Huawei P20 and P20 Pro hands-on review

Numbers might be deceiving though, as Huawei has actually upgraded the main 12MP sensor. Yes, the resolution is the same as before, but the sensor is now bigger at 1/2.3" and its pixels are among the largest around at 1.55µm. To puts things in perspective the Mate 10's 12MP sensor is 1/2.9" large with 1.25µm pixel size.

The 12MP sensor on the P20 (probably Sony IMX378) is 61% larger than the iPhone X's 12MP one and 22% larger than the 12MP main snappers on the Galaxy S9 duo.

The 20MP monochrome is the same as before - 1/3.09" sensor with 1.0µm pixels.

The camera relies on the same 4-way focusing technologies as before - you get laser AF, depth detection, contrast-detect AF, and phase detect AF. A dual-tone LED flash is around, too.

Huawei P20 and P20 Pro hands-on review

This dual-camera setup offers 2x zoom and will be capable of 720p@960fps slow-mo video capturing.

Huawei P20 Pro

The Huawei P20 Pro packs the new and undeniably more exciting Leica Triple Camera. The separated snapper is the 20MP f/1.6 monochrome camera that we know from the P10 and that's also present on the P20. Then a larger hump follows with a brand-new 40MP 1/1.7" RGB OIS sensor behind f/1.8 lens. Next to it is an 8MP cam with f/2.4 telephoto lens.

Huawei P20 Pro has a 40MP sensor, plus 5x hybrid zoom

The 4-way autofocus is here to stay, but the dual-LED flash has been upgraded with a color-temperature sensor for more accurate tuning of the low-light shots.

This new setup allows for 3x optical zoom and up to 5x lossless hybrid zoom according to Huawei.

Huawei P20 and P20 Pro hands-on review

Other notable capabilities of this new setup include the jaw-dropping maximum ISO of 102,400. Instant autofocus on anything that's as close as 3 meters and screen off-to-shoot time of 0.3s. There is also this promise for incredible low-light shots at 1 lux, but we'll believe that when we see them.

Shared features

Both P20 and P20 Pro rely on AI to boost the camera performance. For starters, the camera can detect various scenes and tune the settings accordingly. This works even in macro mode and the camera should recognize what exactly you are trying to shoot close-up.

Next come the portrait shots, which now feature various studio-like background blur and lighting effects. The most recent iPhones kicked off this trend, but it seems others are taking it a lot more seriously and expand on these effects.

Probably the most notable advancements are when it comes to stabilization. Huawei says it managed to solve a 179-years old problem - the handshake during professional long-exposure shots. That's right - thanks to the new AI-driven software and optical stabilization you will no longer need a tripod for long-shutter shots. Huawei also promises the best video stabilization around. These are some bold claims and we can't wait to test them.

Finally, both devices come with a 24MP selfie camera with autofocus and f/2.0 lens. It supports background and studio-like lightning effects. Face Unlock is available via this camera and 2D mapping process and it will take just 0.5s for unlocking the phone. It will use the screen to illuminate your face if necessary, which may not be as pleasant and seamless as on the iPhone X.

Chipset

The Huawei P20 smartphones are utilizing the Kirin 970 chipset. The SoC was introduced at IFA in Belin last September and is the main ingredient of the Mate 10 phablets. The choice of the chip is hardly a surprise, as it's the latest available by the company.

Even though the Kirin 970 was released last Fall, it is still relevant. It has a very powerful processor with 4x2.4 GHz Cortex-A73 & 4x1.8 GHz Cortex-A53 cores. Those two clusters can work together if needed.

The GPU is a 12-core Mali-G72 unit, and while it may not be as fast as the most recent Adreno 630, it doesn't need to be. Both P20 and P20 Pro have 1080p screens, which means we can expect superb performance in the next couple of years.

The NPU is here as well, of course, as its native acceleration for the AI tasks is what should be making some real difference in the camera.

Wrapping up

Huawei P20 and P20 Pro will probably go down in history for two things - the Leica Triple Camera and the Twilight color option.

We are just a bit worried about the lack of that triple-camera on the regular P20, which is not that much smaller than the P20 Pro, yet it omits the headline feature. The pricing seems to be making up for this, though, so we could probably argue the P20 is actually more for those looking for a solid camera without breaking the bank.

Huawei P20 and P20 Pro hands-on review

We are glad Huawei sprung into action and brought us two of the hottest flagships this season. And while its tumultuous situation in the USA might reflect poorly on its bottom line, its future surely seems bright elsewhere with these new P20 devices.
