VentureBeat

  • VentureBeat writer Evan Blass leaked HTC's upcoming U12 Plus flagship in all its glory.
  • The phone looks to feature a tall display, a total of four cameras, and a Snapdragon 845 processor.
  • Interestingly, the regular U12 might not exist at all.

The HTC U11 is a great smartphone, but it quickly became an afterthought in the face of the Galaxy S8s and Pixel 2s of the world. HTC hopes to change that narrative with the U12 Plus, which VentureBeat writer Evan Blass leaked in all of its glory.

According to Blass, who spoke with a person familiar with HTC's plans, the U12 Plus sports two 8 MP selfie cameras and a 12+16 MP combo around back. The fingerprint scanner is also found around back, though it thankfully occupies its own space below the cameras.

Reportedly below the two selfie cameras is the U12 Plus' 6-inch LCD panel with WQHD+ resolution. If you squeeze the phone out of frustration over the lack of AMOLED, you will trigger HTC's second-generation Edge Sense software. Even though we do not yet know how it differs from the first-generation Edge Sense, the feature lets you launch apps and shortcuts by squeezing the sides of the phone.

Under the hood, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 processor and 6 GB of RAM reportedly power the U12 Plus. The phone offers either 64 GB or 128 GB of expandable storage through the microSD card slot, with the 3,420 mAh battery somewhat average in today's era of big phones.

If these specifications sound familiar, that is because HTC custom ROM developer LlabTooFeR touched on most of these points

href="https://www.androidauthority.com/htc-u12-leak-specs-snapdragon-845-dual-camera-843081/">not too long ago. LlabTooFeR also suggested that the U12 Plus runs Android Oreo out of the box and features HTC's Face Sense — presumably a facial recognition feature.

According to Blass, HTC intentionally used the "Plus" suffix to compete with the Galaxy S9 Plus. Interestingly, Blass also said a regular U12 to compete with the regular Galaxy S9 might never exist. Seeing how the rumored U12 was also codenamed "Imagine," it could be that HTC wanted to focus its resources on one flagship smartphone instead of two.

Editor's Pick

As for when we will see the U12 Plus, the previous April timeframe might be out of the question. HTC reportedly encountered a problem or two, which pushed the U12 Plus' release back to sometime between late April and early May.

Then again, it might be best for HTC to take its time and make the U12 Plus as good of a phone as possible. The company has gone through some rough times lately, with recent layoffs and poor revenues painting a bleak picture for the Taiwanese unit.

Asking one phone to turn a company's fortunes around is a tall order. That might be why HTC will also reportedly launch the Breeze and Breeze Plus, better known as the Desire 12 and Desire 12 Plus, respectively.
