But while Android phones have few real opponents on other platforms, internal competition is intense.
Introduction
Announced a few weeks ago in its homeland, Huawei's Honor 10 has now made the trip to Europe. We were there for the launch party in the UK, and we got to spend some time with it on the event floor gathering initial impressions to share with you. But first let's go over the specs.

For starters, it's the Kirin 970 in charge - the Honor 10 gets Huawei's in-house flagship-grade chipset, much like the Honor View 10, careful not to mix up the two. There are 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage on board, but don't be surprised if those numbers are different in your particular market - like 6GB of RAM, or 64GB of storage. In any case there's no microSD slot, which is a bummer.
The similarity of the non-View 10 to the View 10 continues into the camera department, where the Honor 10 brings a 16MP primary cam that shoots in color, and an extra black and white one. Only here, the monochrome camera is 24MP as opposed to the View 10's 20MP. On the front there are even more megapixels, too many perhaps - the 24MP camera seems to have been snatched off straight from the P20 (and we weren't exactly thrilled with this one).
The Honor 10 comes with a 3,400mAh battery, 10% less than the View 10, but then the display on this one is slightly smaller - it's a 5.84-inch IPS LCD with rounded corners and the mandatory notch (sigh).
Huawei Honor 10 specs:
- Body: Aluminum frame, glass back, 149.6 x 71.2 x 7.7 mm, 153g
- Screen: 5.84" 2280x1080px (19:9) IPS LCD, 432ppi, notched
- Chipset: HiSilicon Kirin 970, Octa-core (4x2.4 GHz Cortex-A73 & 4x1.8 GHz Cortex-A53), Mali-G72 MP12 GPU
- Memory: 4GB RAM, 128GB of storage (these may vary by market though), no microSD slot
- Camera: Dual: 16MP RGB (f/1.8) + 24 MP B/W, phase detection autofocus, 2160p @ 30fps video
- Selfie cam: 24MP (f/2.0), 1080p video
- OS: Android 8.1 Oreo with Huawei EMUI 8.1 + AI features
- Battery: 3,400 mAh non-removable, Huawei Super Charger (5V@4.5A)
- Connectivity: Dual Nano-SIM; USB-C (USB 2.0), NFC, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, GLONASS
- Misc: IR Blaster, front-mounted fingerprint sensor with gesture navigation, single bottom-firing loudspeaker

That's most of the important numbers taken care of, let's move on to the hands-on area.
Huawei Honor 10 hands-on
To make sure you don't mistake the Honor 10 for an Honor View 10, instead of going for a more meaningful naming scheme, Honor (cough, Huawei) made the new phone out of glass as opposed to metal. It's Gorilla Glass of some sort on the back, though Huawei's mum on the exact version - don't quote us on it, but in such cases, it's usually GG3.

We're not saying the blue View 10 we had for review wasn't pretty, on the contrary. But Huawei really knows what it's doing with its color schemes on its glass phones - look at the gorgeous P20s - and you'd be getting some of that flair with the Honor 10.
A lot of it, actually, particularly if you opt for one of the Phantom colors - Blue or Green. They're equally as spectacular as the ones on the P20, and we'd struggle to understand why someone would get Boring Glacier Grey or Incognito Midnight Black. The options are there, though, if you're that person.
No escaping the notch • We got (un)lucky with black • 'AI Camera, seriously?'
We're not entirely sure about the AI CAMERA lettering on the back. Yes, we know that 'Beauty in AI' is the Honor 10's tagline, and yes, AI has a been a mandatory buzzword this past year. That said, we wouldn't object if it stays in promo materials instead of being sprinkled on the devices themselves. Anyway, the P20's back was a different kind of offender with all sorts of text stamped on the back, so the Honor 10 might actually be better in this respect.

In the top left corner you'll find the camera combo, in a slightly raised common assembly, flanked by the flash. We dare say that it looks slightly better than the View 10's minion goggles of a setup. Other than that, the back of the handset is pretty clean with just the Honor logo in the bottom third.
Flip over to the front and you're greeted by a notch. Okay, maybe we should have stopped with the notch hate by now - everyone and their subbrand's got one. The Honor 10 has a perfectly alright almost-6-inch FullHD+ display (5.84", 2280x1080px). The aspect ratio works out to 19:9, with the extra 1:9 on top to accommodate the notch.
Inside said notch, Huawei's found just enough room for the earpiece, front-facing camera, and the ambient light/proximity sensors - so just like the P20 bunch.

The fingerprint reader down on the bottom is trying to make a case for the existence of the bottom bezel. There's a bit more chin than on the company's flagships, indeed, but only marginally so - no big deal. Of course, our principal gripe with having a screen notch and a thick bottom bezel at the same time remains - Apple did it out of necessity, the others are doing it because it's fashionable.
The frame is made of aluminum - not all of the View 10's metal is lost. There's a power button on the right, just slightly above the midpoint, and the volume rocker is above that. Both controls are conveniently located and shouldn't pose issues in usability. The card tray is on the opposite side and it takes two nanoSIMs and zero microSD cards - the built-in storage is all the storage you get.

The USB-C port is on the bottom, in a classic central position. It only adheres to the USB 2.0 spec for data transfer, but it also supports Huawei's Super Charge fast charging at up to 5V/4.5A. There's a bundled fast charger too, so you won't have to purchase one separately from other companies with notched display phones would have you do.
To the one side of the USB port is the 3.5mm jack - one area where getting a midranger comes with benefits, as Huawei flagships have started ditching the headphone jack (vanilla Mate 10 was the last to have it). On the other side is the loudspeaker and the microphone, and the different sized hole for the mic is really making us uneasy. But hey, Huawei designers said so - so be it.
Camera
The Honor 10 comes with a typical Huawei camera setup - that is, typical in its concept, but new when it comes to the specifics. We mean there's a regular color cam and a second one that shoots in black and white - that's the typical bit. The 16MP RGB cam has been lifted off the View 10, but the 24MP monochrome one we haven't seen before.

Of course, it's all about the AI with this new handset and promo materials state that its camera recognizes in real time 22 different categories of subjects and shooting scenarios and adjusts shooting parameters accordingly. If the Master AI in the P20 and P20 Pro wasn't all that great, we wonder just how good this 'apprentice' AI is going to be. We did take a few quick shots right after the event, but we won't be reading too much into them - we'll leave that for the full review. Just in case, one is with AI, the other one - without.
We've been known to enjoy zoom cameras on smartphones (well, some of us, at least) - to the point that we tested Huawei's own P20 Pro against the Galaxy S9+, check that out if you've missed it. Anyway, back to the Honor 10 - here's a bunch of photos with the zoom set to '2x'.

Naturally, we also snapped some samples with the monochrome camera.
The selfie cam on the Honor 10 is a 24MP unit, this one comes from the P20s. It's got pixels to spare, but lacks autofocus.
Benchmarks
It's the Kirin 970 that powers the Honor 10, Huawei's top-tier chipset introduced with the Mate 10, and more recently used in the P20 and P20 Pro. It's also featured in another Honor smartphone, the View 10 we've been mentioning here and there. All that goes to say that we're well aware what it's capable of. Even so, we weren't going to spare the Honor 10 some benchmarks.

First impressions

A more affordable Huawei P20 without the Leica camera - that pretty much sums up the Honor 10. Similar build and striking looks, best chipset Huawei has to offer, and (of course) a notched display. Obviously, we've only had the handset with us for just a few hours and more serious testing is in order. We're adding the Honor 10 to the review schedule, stay tuned.
