  • Rebble is asking Pebble owners and developers to link their accounts to their service before the end of June.

Pebble fans might have thought the end was near.  Owners of the many Pebble smartwatches were informed by Fitbit, which bought the company's assets in 2016, that software and services support for those products would finally end on June 30, 2018. However, there is some new hope for those remaining Pebble users, thanks to a third party group called, in a nice bit of branding, Rebble.

According to the

href="http://rebble.io/">group's website (via Engadget), its ultimate goal is to replace "key pieces of the Pebble ecosystem: the appstore, firmware, and mobile apps." In order to get that ready, Rebble is asking current Pebble owners to link their accounts to the group's authentication services, preferably by the end of June. The group adds that this deadline is even more important for developers who have created Pebble-based apps. After June 30, Rebble says it won't be able to identify developers who failed to link their Pebble accounts, so they won't be able to update their apps through Rebble.

While Rebble won't have its promised services available to Pebble owners on July 1, it's still better than nothing. When Rebble does go live, it plans to offer basic data services for free to Pebble owners, but may ask for a fee to access more complex services. If you are a current Pebble owner, you can link your account to Rebble now at the link below.
