It seems like Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact and XZ2 owners have had to contend with strange stripes appearing on their screens. The Japanese company has now offered an explanation to Tweakers (h/t: Xperia Blog), claiming the striped displays aren't actually a defect.

The stripes reportedly appear when users frequently rub or touch their display, disappearing after a short time. Nevertheless, it's distracting enough that some users have taken to the Sony Mobile forum to report the issue.

Testing by Tweakers shows that the XZ1 Compact, XZ2 and XZ2 Compact are affected by the issue. The Xperia X and XZ Premium don't seem to suffer from the patterns, however.

In a statement to Tweakers, Sony says the striped displays aren't actually a defect but occur due to "electrostatic" in some devices.

"Due to the properties of the screen, stripe patterns may be seen in some models due to electrostatic effects. It is not a functional defect and usually the patterns disappear when the electrostatic disappears," read a machine-translated version of Sony's statement.
