Update, July 26, 2018 (03:48PM EST): A Google rep posted yesterday in a support thread about the previously-acknowledged problem of slow wake times on Google Pixel 2 XL devices. The good news is that a temporary fix is on the way at some point soon. The bad news is that a proper, permanent fix won't arrive until the stable release of Android P lands on Pixel devices — which likely won't be until August or September.

The comment from the development team is reprinted below:

"The problem was caused as a side effect of a fix introduced in June SMR in order to fix cases of bright flashes before entering Always On Display for displays on certain (isolated) devices (this was actually pointed out in comment #44 of public bug). The fix will be reverted in July SMR to address the slow unlock regression. A proper fix for the original issue which won't cause slow unlock side effect will be available on P release"

Original article (06/05): Yesterday, Google started rolling out the June 2018 update to its line of Pixel and Nexus devices. One of the feature improvements of the update was better Always-On Display consistency, but it appears that it's actually made things worse.

Users on Reddit and Google's issue tracker are reporting that after updating to the June 2018 patch, their Google Pixel 2 XL devices are

waking slower than before the update. When they press the power button or place their finger on the fingerprint sensor, there is a several-second delay before the device wakes.

Since so many users are reporting the problem, it's unlikely this is an isolated bug. However, it does appear to be relegated only to the Pixel 2 XL, and not any of the other Pixel or Nexus devices.

Editor's Pick

Some users report that by turning off the Always-On Display feature, wake times return to normal. If you have a problem with these delays on your Pixel 2 XL, you can try to turn off AOD to see if it gives you a temporary fix:

  • Go to the Settings section of your Pixel 2 XL.
  • Perform a search at the top for "Ambient Display," and click that feature.
  • Toggle the Always on option to "Off."

As per the Google issue tracker post, someone from Google has already been assigned to address this problem. It's likely that a permanent fix will roll out soon.
