Google Pixel devices

So far the only manufacturer that has revealed details about their Android Pie update rollout plans is Google. In its blog post announcing the release of the new OS, Google said that "starting today, all Pixel phones will receive an update to Android 9."

This will probably make you very optimistic about getting your slice of Pie very soon, but there's no guarantee that will actually be the case. Judging from previous rollouts, Google will probably push the Android 9.0 Pie update to a small number of Pixel units first, followed by a wider release over the next days. Google does this in order to catch and fix any potential issues or bugs before they hit a large number of devices.

If you can't wait for that notification icon to hit your status bar, you can try flashing either a full Android 9.0 system image or just the OTA file. The latter option is quicker and less hassle, as it's the equivalent of receiving the OTA straight from Google. We'll update this post with download links once they become available.

Coming soon: Digital Wellbeing and Slices

While Android Pie is hitting Pixels today, not all the features that Google has teased for Android P are coming right away. Digital Wellbeing, a major Google initiative for this year, will be arriving this fall with the Pixel 3. But Google announced a beta program for Digital Wellbeing – check out the details here. Meanwhile, Android Slices (which provide quick access to specific features of compatible apps) will also arrive this fall; there's no beta program for Slices.

Other Android manufacturers

What about non-Google devices? Considering this year we got Android P beta programs from multiple OEMs, we're hoping to see quick Android 9.0 Pie rollouts coming from the likes of Nokia, OnePlus, Oppo, Sony, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Essential.

In its blog post, Google said that it's "working closely" with partners in order to bring Pie to new and existing phones. "Many manufacturers are planning to launch or upgrade devices [with Android Pie] by the end of this year," the company said. As of this writing, there's no official information from Android OEMs regarding the rollout of the final Android Pie release to their devices. We'll update when we hear more.

Android beta releases have traditionally only been available for Google's Pixel and Nexus phones, but that changed this year with Project Treble. The Android P beta has been available for all of Google's recent Pixel phones as well as 11 phones from other OEMs. The full list can be found below:

In addition, Nokia recently brought the Android P update (beta) to three of its other phones: the Nokia 6.1, Nokia 7, and Nokia 8 Sirocco, though only in China. The beta test is quite small too, so odds are you won't be able to test the Android P update on these phones unless Nokia opens up more slots.

We're currently on the fifth Android P developer preview (beta 4), but there's no guarantee all the devices listed here will receive every beta update. Take a look at the list below to see which Android P update beta releases are compatible with each phone.

Google Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, and Pixel 2 XL

All four of Google's Pixel phones can run the fifth Android P developer preview (beta 4). Since these are Google phones, they'll continue to get new Android P builds first when they're announced.

Essential Phone

Mere hours after Google rolled out the fifth Android P developer preview, Essential also announced that it would begin rolling out the update to the Essential Phone. Other OEMs, pay attention!

Nokia 7 Plus

The Nokia 7 Plus currently runs the fourth Android P developer preview (beta 3), with HMD Global once again at the front of the pack.

OnePlus 6

OnePlus has rolled out the third Android P developer preview (beta 3) to the OnePlus 6. The latest build includes a few third-party app compatibility fixes.

Oppo R15 Pro

We haven't heard any updates from Oppo about new beta builds, so we can assume the R15 Pro currently runs the second Android P developer preview (beta 1).

Sony Xperia XZ2

Vivo X21 and X21UD

The Vivo X21 and X21UD currently run the second Android P preview (beta 1).

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S

Xiaomi has been quiet about releasing new beta builds for the Mi Mix 2S, so we should assume it's running the second Android P preview (beta 1).

Android P update release date and timeline

Google released the first Android P developer preview on March 7, 2018. Following that alpha release, Google revealed the first Android P beta build (developer preview 2) at Google I/O 2018 on May 8, also announcing other OEM devices would be compatible with the Android P beta.

The third Android P preview (beta 2) released June 6, 2018. This build featured the final APIs and official SDK. Following that, the fourth Android P preview launched on July 2, 2018. It included the latest Android security patches as well as some bug fixes and minor tweaks.

Google released the fifth Android P developer preview (beta 4) on July 25. This release candidate build includes final APIs and system behaviors.

Google release the final, public version of Android 9.0 Pie on August 6.
