IFA 2018 is coming to Berlin later this month and it'll be bursting at the seams with technology. Running from Aug. 31 through Sept. 5, Europe's largest consumer electronics trade show will feature all the major players in the tech. We'll see a smorgasbord of new devices from smartphones to smart speakers to, well, smart everything else. Products are announced before during and after the event, so keep checking in.

We've compiled everything we know about what will be announced, what might be announced, and what we hope to see from the companies attending. We'll update as often as possible with fresh information, and we'll take a closer look at devices from companies like Samsung, Huawei, Sony, HTC, LG, and more.

IFA is always open to the general public, and you can get tickets online. One-day tickets currently cost 40 euros (~$50), while two-day tickets cost 58 euros (~$66). These prices will rise to 49 euros (~$56) and 72 euros (~$83) if you buy them at the event. You can get them on IFA's website via the button above.

Oh, and if you don't have time to read about IFA 2018, we recently recorded a podcast about it!

Samsung at IFA 2018

Samsung used to treat IFA with reverence, launching its big smartphones and wearables leading up to the main exhibition.

How things change. Samsung now announces its smartphones at standalone "Unpacked" events. The Note 9 launched on August 9, weeks before IFA — and a bunch of the early rumors about what Samsung would unveil at IFA have already been unveiled before the show.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 was a pretty good bet, but it's out already. We reviewed it. It's not bad, just a tad pricey.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch (it ticks!) already launched, and that was a hot rumor for IFA too.

Samsung decided to keep the pre-IFA launch momentum going with the Galaxy Home smart speaker, powered by Bixby, and we'll at least get more detail at IFA.

So, what's left?

Samsung is still a thing at IFA 2018 — it's even hosting an event. Right now, it looks a little bit short on anything new. Here's the PR image for its event on August 30th, which we'll be attending:

Samsunf IFA 2018

TVs, fridges, washing machines, and the Note 9, which will have been out for almost a week. Maybe Samsung's keen to talk about display technology like MicroLED, or its evolved Bixby 2.0 AI assistant platform. A new pair of headphones or earbuds is always possible.

Unless Samsung recently got unusually good at plugging leaks, we aren't expecting much — that's unusual. Regardless, if anything new pops up, we'll be there to find out.

Huawei at IFA 2018

Huawei will have a big IFA 2018 and it all starts with an Android Authority exclusive, the P20 Pro's two new gradient colors — a bold black-turquoise and a sea-inspired shimmering white. We still don't know additional details like the new color names and their availability, but the cat's out of the bag — we know they're coming. We look forward to doing our best to capture the transition colors as best we can.

The good news continues on with the recent announcement that the company's IFA keynote will focus on unveiling the new Kirin 980, based on 7nm fabrication technology. Huawei's indicated the Mate 20 will include the Kirin 980, and that it will launch in October, so the phone won't be at IFA, but it's not far away now.

The wearables front is interesting too — a bunch of rumors from early 2018 might play out. CEO Richard Yu confirmed the company's plans for a Huawei Watch 3 at MWC earlier this year, but didn't give much away on timing.

"It will come later – there's no hurry because Huawei Watch 2 sells well," he said.

Maybe IFA is late enough. All in all, while we're not going to see a Mate 20, there's still quite a lot to see.

Honor at IFA 2018

Honor Play IFA 2018 invite

Huawei sub-brand Honor might be going further than its parent. It will host a press conference at IFA 2018 and its invitation said in very big letters: "Crazy Fast" and "Crazy Smart." Those are, by no coincidence at all, the words used on Amazon India's Honor Play listing in early August.

We'll be amazed if that doesn't mean Honor will debut the Honor Play, the 6.3-inch gaming phone targeted at the PUBG and Fortnite crowd so far only seen in China and India.

Sony at IFA 2018

Sony has always had a big presence at IFA and we expect no less this year. The company should release a few devices and concepts to make sure we know they're on the cutting edge. Whether we'll see new flagship smartphones is anyone's guess.

Sony's IFA 2018 press conference will be held on August 30, and if there isn't a new TV or new set of headphones, we're considering walkout. As for smartphones, rumors point to an Xperia XZ3 and XZ3 Compact.

After Sony announced the Xperia XZ2 at MWC 2018 back in February, seeing the XZ3 at IFA would be a rather quick turnaround, but that's not all that unusual. Most likely the XZ3 and the XZ3 Compact will appear, but won't go on sale for some weeks after the big reveal.

The leaks and rumors around the XZ3 have been dripping out, and figuring out what's real hasn't been easy.

The XZ3 was rumored to have dual cameras. That leak almost certainly just ended up being the XZ2 Premium, which only came out in late July.

We're likely to see a fresh iteration on the base design of the XZ2, keeping the device's brand new curved back design, with some improvements.  Leaked spec sheets describe a thinner device that shaves off 1mm of thickness down to 10.1mm, down from 11.1mm.

We didn't love the button placement of the XZ2. Sadly, we haven't seen much suggesting that will change in the XZ3. The XZ2 was also one of the slipperiest devices of all time, but it's also unlikely Sony will add much grip.

The XZ3 display specs should remain the same as the XZ2, with some small modifications. Fairly reliable render leaks suggest rounded corners as the only design evolution.

The XZ3 may also offer 6GB of RAM over the XZ2's 4GB, and perhaps internal storage expanded to 128GB. Although it'll be thinner, watch for a slight battery size increase as well.

These changes should be reflected on the XZ3 Compact as well.

Sony might also roll out an update to the LF-S50G smart home speaker

it released last year. It packs the Google Assistant inside and Sony could easily show off its successor.

LG at IFA 2018

LG might be shaking things up. Given the LG V30's debut at IFA 2017 was the company's first smartphone launch at IFA, and the LG V20 was unveiled in San Francisco at the same time as IFA 2016, the LG V40 was a red-hot chance to launch at IFA 2018, too.

That might not be the case. We know the South Korean giant is holding a keynote focused on ThinQ, LG's Artificial Intelligence strategy and brand, on Aug. 31. The event should show off smart furniture like the LG Styler ThinQ, which was announced pre-IFA.

The big question is if we'll see the LG V40 ThinQ at IFA 2018 at all — Korean press seems to think the company will skip it. Those guys tend to be on the money, and they're suggesting the company wants as much distance as possible between its phone new phone, the Samsung Note 9, and the coming new iPhones.

ASUS at IFA 2018

ASUS might be coming to the gaming party with its intriguing gaming-first ROG Phone. The company revealed the phone in June at a big event, where we got some hands-on time. The party ended a little abruptly when it wasn't clear when this phone will be coming out. It now appears the phone is set for IFA 2018, packing bells and whistles like an overclocked Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 CPU set at 2.96 GHz, 90Hz AMOLED display, 8GB of RAM, three USB-C ports, 4,000mAh battery, and glowing ROG logo.

There are also accessories like a heatsink to attach to the back, for keeping everything cool, as well as a gamepad accessory, and more. IFA 2018 should bring important info like price, release date, and so forth.

Blackberry at IFA 2018

The Blackberry Key2 LE, or Lite Edition, is all but certain to launch at IFA this year. This is manufacturer TCL's attempt at a leaner and cheaper model. Early leaks suggest it'll have both cut-down specs and a keyboard more like the older KeyOne.

The Key2 launched with at $650, so the Key2 LE should come in a fair bit under that. Our review of the Key2 was pretty positive, so hopefully the Key2 LE will offer similar amount of value at a budget price. Release dates and price tags will come out of the Aug. 30 event.

Lenovo/Motorola at IFA 2018

The rumor mill is fairly quiet regarding new Lenovo Android products, but the company should bring an assortment of laptops, and possibly even Chromebooks, to the IFA table.

Lenovo's U.S. smartphone brand Motorola is in an interesting spot. The company unveiled the Moto X4 at IFA 2017, and while it had some cool tech, it ended up being a little disappointing.

Maybe we'll see a Moto X5 at IFA, but we just saw the iPhone-X-clone-no-really-you-should-see-it Motorola P30 unveiled in China not long ago, we just reviewed the Moto G6 and G6 Play, and the Moto Z3 is still very hot from the oven. There's a lot happening and already done. There have also been some pretty concrete reports that Motorola canceled the X5, so we may not see much.

Still, it'd be strange if Motorola showed up empty handed, given the headlines it generated from the Moto X4. We awarded a cool audio feature of the X4 powered by Tempow "Best of IFA 2017," with a real award and everything. Maybe Moto will steal the show again somehow.

Nokia at IFA 2018

Nokia remains on the upswing thanks to its crafty manufacturer HMD Global. Ahead of IFA, Nokia sent out invites for an Aug. 21 event, right before IFA. Here's how Nokia teased its new device:

Nokia teaser for August 21st event

That "most awaited" phone ended up being the new Nokia 6.1 Plus, a sort of next iteration of the 6 line, and part of Nokia's attempt to win the mid-range market. It's a nice device but adds a notch, seemingly just to fit in, which disappointed many. There were also details on a Nokia 5.1 Plus, but that won't be out until September.

Plenty expected the Nokia 9 flagship at this event, so maybe it will get an IFA announcement. From what we know, it should feature a range of top-of-the-line specs, including the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, with as much as 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Rumors have pointed at a 5.7-inch OLED display, and for a long time, indicated an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Perhaps the most interesting feature is the rumored five-lens design on the back, which would be something to behold. In any case, we'll see more of the Nokia 6.1 Plus, along with pricing and availability details. If we're really lucky, we'll have hands-on with the Nokia 9.

Acer at IFA 2018

Acer released two Android products last year at IFA in Berlin, the Holo360 and Vision360 360-degree  cameras. They were generally high-end consumer level products focused on niches — the Vision 360 was aimed at dashcams in cars, for example. Acer also released plenty of other products, like high-end gaming PCs, laptops, funky notebooks, a Chromebook, projectors, VR tech, a device for your dog to get treats — the list goes on and on.

At IFA 2018, Acer will get in early with an Aug. 29 event, so if anything makes a strong crossover into the smartphone world, we'll let you know.

Fitbit at IFA 2018

Fitbit Charge 3

Fitbit usually shows up with fresh devices for IFA. This year that might mean the just-announced Fitbit Charge 3. As we leaked in mid-August, the Charge 3 comes with a new touchscreen interface, which is exactly what Charge 2 fans wanted. The intel we obtained told us plenty, and the later official release filled in all the gaps. The Fitbit Charge 3 is available for pre-order now and set for official release in most places in October. It will feature waterproofing, a special edition with NFC for payments, and more. We should get plenty of wrist-on time with the device, and anything else Fitbit has up its sleeves, at IFA.

Final thoughts

IFA always has special surprises and we can't wait to tell you what they are. We might see something outside the box from the smaller brands like ZTE or Alcatel, or even from entirely new companies. Whatever we get, it'll give a bunch of insight into what's coming next.

We'll update this post to keep you up to speed, as new smartphones, tablets, and other gadgets debut.

Meanwhile, let us know which of the devices mentioned in this post you are most excited about in the comments!
