Oculus Quest Oculus

  • Oculus just announced a new standalone VR headset called the Quest.
  • The headset is said to rival the Oculus Rift in performance while not being tethered to a computer.
  • The Quest should go on sale in Spring of 2019 starting at $399.

While some call virtual reality the future of gaming, computing, and so much more, the only way to get the most premium experience is by having the VR headset wired to a computer. This might soon change, though, as Facebook and Oculus have just announced a completely wireless headset called the Quest (via The Verge).

Standalone VR headsets have been done before, but they've typically been powered by a smartphone or a processor made for smartphones. While this has made the product category accessible to a broader audience, it hasn't provided high-quality experiences that make people fall in love with VR.

As you can see from the photo and video above, the Oculus Quest consists of a headset and two motion controllers. The headset offers two 1600 x 1440 resolution displays (one for each eye) inside the headset and four wide-angle cameras arranged on the outside for

motion and position tracking. Using the cameras alone, the headset is supposedly going to be able to track up to 4,000 square feet as to allow the user to move around.

As previously mentioned, the Oculus Quest is supposed to rival the quality found on the higher-quality Rift which is required to be plugged into a computer. While Oculus says there are only 50 titles that are ready to be played on the Quest right now, more will be ported over from the Rift in due time.

Editor's Pick

Unfortunately, the Oculus Quest isn't quite ready for the prime time just yet. While Oculus tells us that the VR headset will start for just $399 with 64GB of built-in storage, the company hasn't announced how much processing power will be crammed into the device.

The Oculus Quest is due to launch in the spring of 2019. You can check out the company's website to learn more about the latest Oculus VR headset.
