Android Pie Statue Google Developers

  • Rick Osterloh says that 75 percent of all Pixel owners have upgraded to Pie.
  • Even with the number of Google phones running the latest version of Android, it isn't enough to account for even 0.01 percent of the Android market.

Last week we reported that over half of the iPhones and iPads released in the last four years were already running the latest version of iOS. In response to this, Rick Osterloh, Senior Vice President of Hardware at Google, retweeted our article and gave an interesting statistic. As it turns out, Pixel users are quick to update to the latest version of Android.

In the two months since Google made Android 9 Pie official, Osterloh states that roughly 75 percent of Pixel owners have upgraded to the latest operating system version. While a majority of these users most likely jumped onto Pie the moment it was made available, the holdouts appear to be trickling in.

While this statistic stands out, comparing it to September's distribution numbers shows that Pixel users who have upgraded don't even account for 0.01 percent of all two billion plus active Android devices. And even though other manufacturers like Essential and OnePlus have begun rolling out the firmware upgrade, we likely won't see much movement on the distribution numbers until OEMs like Samsung release Pie for its flagship smartphones.
