But while Android phones have few real opponents on other platforms, internal competition is intense.
- After bringing Nest back into Google's umbrella, it's rumored that the smart home company might get rebranded.
- If Nest was rebranded to use the "Home" name, Google could more easily sell its security cameras and other products alongside its smart speakers.
- Discussions are still early, so it's not entirely clear if this is a done deal.
Since Google bought Nest back in 2014 for a couple of billion dollars, the smart home company has gone back and forth on being a standalone corporation within Alphabet and being a part of Google. But back in July, Alphabet moved Nest back into Google, making it a part of the company's home division.
Through this transition, Rishi Chandra, Vice President of Product Management for Google's home and living room products, was put in charge of Nest. With the change of leadership and deeper integration with other divisions, many employees voiced hope for the search giant to create new products that integrate better into Google's ecosystem.
Thanks to a new rumor from 9to5Google, it sounds like the first step towards a more unified front between Nest and the rest of Google's smart home products is a rebranding:
Google is working on a rebrand of its Nest line of smart home
While this is pure speculation as the report is pretty scarce on details, it wouldn't be hard to imagine Google giving Nest products the "Home" branding. As seen with the release of the Home Hub, by using the "Home" name, the product is immediately associated with the Google Home smart speakers and other related products.
Again, there's been no confirmation on this naming scheme, but it doesn't seem too unplausible that Nest's products could one day be called the Home Cam, Home Thermostat, Home Doorbell, and so forth.
What do you think about this rumor? Do you believe Nest needs to be rebranded or will the name change just confuse customers? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!
