- Sonos announced it will delay support for Google Assistant until sometime in 2019.
- The company did not give a reason for the delay, but said it is making "good progress."
- Sonos will kick off a private beta for Google Assistant support sometime in the near future.
Last year, Sonos said it would update its Sonos One to support Google Assistant sometime in 2018. Today, Sonos went back on that announcement and said it would need more time to "get the experience right." As a result, the company will not push out support for Google Assistant until sometime in 2019.
Sonos did not give a reason for the delay, but said that it is "continuing to make good progress." In the meantime, Sonos owners can sign up for a private beta which will start who knows when.
And the best smart speaker is….
If you make it to the private beta, Sonos asks that you commit to at least 14 hours of listening each week, use 10 voice commands every day, and respond to surveys within 72 hours. Sonos will take a few weeks to screen applicants, with a few hundred lucky homes the first to beta-test Google Assistant. In the "coming months," the number of homes will increase to a few thousand.
If you really want to use a voice assistant with the Sonos One, you can use Amazon's Alexa to get the news, ask for sports and weather updates, set timers, and much more. Through Alexa, you can also control music streaming services like Amazon Music, iHeartRadio, Pandora, SiriusXM, TuneIn, and Spotify.
Alternatively, Sonos said it would provide another update on its progress in early 2019 for those who would rather use Google Assistant.
