Xiaomi Pocophone F1.

Each year, the same manufacturers release newer versions of the same smartphones. This scheduled release schedule becomes an almost endless loop. But the market sometimes gets shaken up when a new company hits the market.

In 2018, we saw five companies come out with new smartphones. While some of these handsets could be seen as flops, others shined brighter than the competition.

With all of that in mind, we asked you which new smartphone brand of 2018 was your favorite.

Who was the best newcomer to the smartphone game this year?

Results

Blowing away the competition, Pocophone was the winner of this week's poll. Coming in with a combined 80 percent of the votes, it's clear that most of the readers that voted enjoyed the budget-friendly, upper mid-range Pocophone F1.

Coming in at second place is Palm with 6 percent of the votes. While this is a name you might have heard long ago, it's a completely different company. And while the Palm Phone might not be running webOS, it does introduce a new companion form factor that some might enjoy.

And with 5.5 percent of the votes, coming in third is Black Shark. This Xiaomi division was focused on the gaming market and released two

smartphones that took on the Asus ROG Phone and Razer Phone 2.

Noteworthy comments

Here are some of the best comments from last week's poll explaining why they voted the way that they did:

  • Realistically, Red is the only true new comer on the list.BUT, I have to give Xiaomi a lot of credit with what they did with Pocophone and the F1. A good idea that was well executed and received. NOW if they'd just get that thing stateside they'd have a serious sales boom on their hands. We're stuck paying too much for that horsepower (assuming you're willing to accept the compromises of the F1). Heck all of Xiaomi would get a boost if they did.I can already see the Palm being an utter flop, Red and Black Shark are very niche products. Realme is unfortunately, but wisely a niche regional market line.
  • Poco. Why is RED even in this list. Add RED in worse newcomers rather 😉
  • Realme. For me it's Realme because they provided some very good smartphones at very low price which suits up the Indian market.
  • Any phone that chooses Micro USB over Usb C at this point of time is an immediate failure in my opinion. Every single RealMe phone has had Micro USB over USB C. RealMe will interest me once they future proof their phones
  • Is Palm a smartphone or smart accessory?
  • For 300 dollars, the poco offers specs that enables it to go toe to toe with the best of android (and even beat it in some departments)! And let's not forget mkbhds blind camera test lol

That's it for this week, everyone. As always, thanks for voting, thanks for the comments, and don't forget to let us know what you thought of the results below.
