Capstone Google Assistant Mirror

Between significant announcements at CES, we sometimes find smaller companies releasing rather ingenious products. One such company is Capstone Connected Home, which just unveiled a Google-enabled Smart Mirror.

As seen in the image, the Smart Mirror's display is placed behind the reflective surface. This technique makes it so that you can still use the device as a mirror, but can also make out what's being shown on the screen.

Now, before we go any further, this isn't a Smart Display like the Home Hub or just a Google Assistant speaker. The Smart Mirror seemingly runs a version of Android as it can download and run apps from the Play Store, has access to the Google Assistant for voice commands, and much more.

As Capstone Connected Home's initial press release doesn't explicitly state what software it runs, we will have to wait to learn more about how it plans to handle firmware and security updates.

However, even though a user can interact with the Smart Mirror with touch and voice, there is a companion control hub that controls the show. Being referred to as something close to a high-end tablet, the Hub can be used independently as an entertainment device while also managing Capstone Connected Home's other products.

Interestingly, the Smart Mirror is supposed to be able to identify the voices of up to six different family members. With this, the Smart Mirror can switch between Google accounts and provide personalized and private results to each person.

Unfortunately, Capstone Connected Home isn't announcing pricing or specific availability just yet. What we do know is that the company plans to release the 19 x 22-inch model in the first quarter of 2019 with other sizes coming later in the year.

The Smart Mirror will be on display at CES, so we will add hands-on footage if we can try it out for ourselves.
