Today, Samsung announced two new USB-C power delivery (PD) controller chips for power adapters.

Called SE8A and MM101, the chips support the latest USB PD 3.0 specification and USB-C PD speeds of up to 100W (20V/5A). According to Samsung, the chips communicate with connected devices to see how much power the devices require. Connected devices then send their battery information to the chips, which then decide whether to use fast or regular charging based on that information.

The SE8A and MM101 feature embedded Flash (eFlash), which enables firmware updates for both chips. The SE8A includes an embedded Secure Element Integrated Circuit, a first for PD controller chips. The embedded Secure Element allows for security measures that include "security key storage, and encoding and decoding of sensitive data within a device."

Meanwhile, the MM101 supports the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). The standard is used for product authentication and to ensure safe charging conditions by sensing moisture.
