Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro glacier blue camera detail

Xiaomi just made headlines by announcing the gorgeous Mi Mix Alpha with a wraparound display. It also closed out its spate of launches by unveiling the spruced-up Redmi 8A in India. Xiaomi is clearly firing on all cylinders and new evidence spotted in the MIUI camera app suggests the company has more surprises in store.

Folks over at XDA-Developers found fresh evidence of a new Xiaomi phone with the ability to support 8K videos at 30fps. An APK teardown of the MIUI camera app, after updating to the MIUI 11 beta, revealed strings mentioning support for 7,680 x 4,320 resolution or 8K videos at 30fps.

In fact, the publication was even able to extract an image showing the words "8K 30fps" next to the Mi logo from the MIUI camera app (seen above).

8K videos at 30fps: A first for phones?

If Xiaomi is indeed planning to include support for 8K video recording at 30fps, it could be the first one to do so. While phones like the Nubia Red Magic 3, Asus ZenFone 6, and ROG Phone 2 bring support for 8K recording, the maximum supported quality is set at 24fps.

All these phones feature the Snapdragon 855 or 855 Plus chipset. The 855 gets the Spectra 380 image signal processor with a maximum supported video quality of 4K at 60fps. Only when pushed, can the Spectra 380 deliver 8K at 15fps like on the Red Magic 3. The ROG Phone 2, as noted by XDA, uses a custom profile in the FreeDCam app to deliver 24fps at 8K.

Editor's Pick

Samsung's Exynos 9820 and 9825 are among the only SoCs that currently support shooting 8K videos at 30fps. However, both the Galaxy S10 and the Note 10 series don't have the camera sensors to

support 8K recording. 8K means 33 megapixels and Samsung's 2019 flagships feature 12MP primary sensors.

If Xiaomi does include 8K/30fps recording, it will likely be on a new phone since even the Mi Mix Alpha's 108MP Samsung sensor maxes out at 6K and 30fps. It'll be interesting to see how Xiaomi handles SoC overheating and battery drain issues after implementing this feature though.
