Huawei P40 Pro Leak Evan BlassEvan Blass

The Huawei P40 series is a few weeks away from its expected reveal date, and we've seen several leaks and heard quite a few rumors already. The latest leak points to rather interesting Wi-Fi capabilities.

Chinese outlet ITHome reports that the Huawei P40 series will offer a self-developed Wi-Fi solution dubbed Wi-Fi 6 Plus. Furthermore, the publication says Huawei will also announce Wi-Fi 6 Plus routers to go with the phones.

There's no word on how this standard will differ from current Wi-Fi 6 connectivity though, but we can likely expect speed and/or congestion improvements.

Nevertheless, a Huawei executive reportedly claimed on Weibo that Wi-Fi 6 speeds aren't as fast as the two year old Mate 20 series. The executive apparently said that the theoretical maximum speed of current Wi-Fi 6 phones is 1,200Mbps and reaches an actual top speed of 900Mbps.

For what it's worth, the Wi-Fi Alliance previously told us that Wi-Fi 6 is theoretically capable of 9.6Gbps. So if current phones are indeed topping out at the speeds claimed by the Huawei executive, it seems like there's plenty of room for improvement.

Faster speeds are always welcomed then, even if it's starting to feel like a case of diminishing returns. But hopefully Huawei's standard plays nicely with other Wi-Fi 6 devices too.
