Update, May 20, 2020 (2:30AM ET): Google's transfer tool to port Google Play Music songs and albums to the YouTube Music app is still not live for many. But the company has announced that you can now sign up to get early access to the tool.
"We're slowly rolling this tool out to everyone over the next couple of weeks. If you do not have access yet, you will soon and we will notify you via email and in the app when it's available to you," a Google employee posted on an official support page. The representative added that those interested in getting the tool before it officially rolls out can do so by signing up for the early access program.
How to request for early access to Google Play Music transfer tool
Here's how you can request early access to Google's transfer tool for Play Music:
- Open this Google form
- Provide the email address you're currently using for Google Play Music
- Share your current country of residence
- Hit submit
Google notes that filling out this form does not guarantee you earlier access to the tool. However, if the tool is made available to you, you should get a notification in your Google Play Music or YouTube Music app as well as your email.
Original article, May 12, 2020 (12:32 PM ET): We have been waiting for Google Play Music to shut down as soon as YouTube Music was first announced. Now, the end is in sight for Google Play Music, as it will shut down completely by the end of 2020. How to transfer Google Play Music content to YouTube Music
Google claims it will only take one press of a button on the YouTube Music app to transfer Google Play Music content over to the app.
- If you have not already done so, go ahead and download the YouTube Music app from the Google Play Store.
- Open the YouTube Music app on your Android device. You should see a "Transfer your Play Music library" option. Press the "Let's Go" button to continue."
- You should then see the "Transfer your latest Google Play Music additions" selection, along with "Not Now" and "Transfer" option buttons on the bottom. Press the "Transfer" button to start the process.
That should be all you should have to do to transfer your Google Play Music songs, albums, and most other content to the YouTube Music app. If you don't have the transfer tool yet, don't worry — Google is rolling it out to users starting today, May 12.
Google has yet to announced specifically when Google Play Music will officially shut down. Since the company is finally allowing transfers of user content to YouTube Music, it likely won't be very long before the older music service shuts down. We will update this article when that information is finally revealed.
