Introduction

The Realme X7 Pro was announced all the way back in September 2020, but remained confined to its China homeland for several months, only making it to Thailand and Taiwan around the end of the year. It continues its global availability expansion and has recently arrived in India. We got to spend some time with an X7 Pro - not enough for a full review, but plenty for an extended hands-on.

Realme X7 Pro hands-on review

The X7 Pro resides somewhere in the upper midrange and has some serious hardware inside. Mediatek's top-tier Dimensity 1000+ chipset is in charge offering high performance and 5G capability, the 6.55-inch SuperAMOLED display has a 120Hz refresh rate, and the 65W charging is among the fastest available.

Perhaps a telephoto camera is the only major omission preventing a more high-end vibe, but with a 64MP main camera and an ultra-wide at the back plus a 32MP selfie unit, the X7 Pro isn't exactly underequipped in the imaging department either.

Here's a quick look at the numbers before we move on.

Realme X7 Pro unboxing

Our unit arrived in a somewhat unusual silver box, a departure from the yellow Realme packaging we've had for a good while, though the Narzos had already given up on yellow as well. The contents are pretty familiar, however.

Realme X7 Pro hands-on review

In India, much like in China, you get the proper 65W adapter to max out the charging capability of the phone. Taiwan only got a 50W unit for some reason, and this may vary by country, so be sure to check - not that 50 watts is somehow insufficient or anything.

In any case, there's a USB-A-to-C cable included, and it's a proprietary one that's needed for the high-speed charging.

Also included is a USB-C-to-3.5mm dongle for connecting wired headphones - these have been disappearing from retail bundles as the absence of headphone jacks on phones got normalized over time, so it's good to see it here.

The smoked silicone case meanwhile offers protection right out of the box.

Design

Let's start with the giant 'Dare to leap' motto on the back - there's no escaping this in pictures, and based on those, we'd be inclined to dismiss it as... distasteful. While it doesn't nearly disappear in real life, it's not as bad as we had expected. Still, it's a prominent and polarizing design accent, and it's okay if you don't like it. It's also okay if you do.

Realme X7 Pro hands-on review

Now, we're talking of the hero colorway, Fantasy, that we got on our hands, which also goes by 'Iridescent' in some regions. It's one of those finishes that plays with light depending on the angle you look at it and spans the entire spectrum from cyan to magenta, and possibly outside of that into dark purple at particularly oblique angles.

Realme X7 Pro hands-on review

The back panel is made of glass, and is treated to a frosted, anti-glare surface. It doesn't pick up fingerprints all that easily.

Realme X7 Pro hands-on review

Two more color options are in existence, Mystic Black and Skyline White, that both skip on the 'Dare to leap' branding, so you might look to them for a less in-your-face design. Not all regions get all three colors, mind you - for example, the white one isn't making it to India.

Over on the front, you're getting that nice 6.55-inch Super AMOLED display with minimal bezels all around. Particularly notable is the slim chin that elevates the X7 Pro's looks to a more high-end stature.

The X7 Pro is equipped with an under-display fingerprint reader of the optical variety. Predictably, it's fast and accurate. We also appreciate its relatively high placement, which makes for a natural reach without unnecessary grip adjustments.

Realme X7 Pro hands-on review

On the opposite end of the handset is the tiny punch-hole for the selfie camera. You'll note here that there's a slit for the earpiece that cuts equal parts into the display glass and the surrounding frame. That earpiece is also a speaker - the X7 Pro has a stereo setup, and that's a most welcome feature.

The main speaker is on the bottom and fires downwards, an orthodox arrangement. The card slot is on the bottom as well, and it takes two nano SIMs but no microSD - a bit of a bummer, considering some markets only get the 128GB storage version. Another less than ideal development you may spot around here is that there's no 3.5mm jack - there's an adaptor for that in the box, at least.

Overall, the Realme X7 Pro is comfortable to hold and use for prolonged periods of time. The buttons offer nice clicky feedback, the back is easy to keep clean, the fingerprint reader is quick and reliable. A minor niggle is that the handset wobbles when put on a table - if you're someone to be irked by that.

Realme X7 Pro hands-on review

Display

The X7 Pro is equipped with a 120Hz 6.55-inch FullHD+ SuperAMOLED display, and it's the top-specced panel in their lineup. They've had a few OLEDs, and they've had a few HRR displays, even some 90Hz OLEDs, but this is their first 120Hz OLED one.

Realme X7 Pro hands-on review

Realme promises a peak brightness of 1200nits for portions of the screen when viewing HDR content and 800nits for the entire screen in general use in bright ambient conditions. We couldn't test the numbers, but we can confirm that the phone remains legible in bright sunlight.

As for refresh rate handling, there are three modes - 120Hz, 60Hz and Auto Select. 60Hz will lock the panel in 60Hz, predictably, while 120Hz will maintain the high refresh rate for the bulk of applications and use cases, though it will still drop to 60Hz for fullscreen video playback.

The Auto Select mode is a bit more conservative - we were still looking at 120Hz for UI elements, but 60Hz in most apps (yet 120Hz in Instagram and Twitter).

Neither 120Hz, nor Auto mode is affected by touching the phone or leaving it idle - the choice of refresh rate is apparently app-based. There's no manual 90Hz mode, nor did we encounter the phone switching to 90Hz for any app or activity.

Realme X7 Pro hands-on review

This all sounds like a perfectly sensible approach even if not quite as granular and activity-based as Samsung's Adaptive refresh rate implementation on the latest high-end Galaxies.

Battery

The X7 Pro is powered by a 4,500mAh battery - about average capacity for the display size, though the 120Hz refresh rate might be a bit much for it, we reckon. That said, we have limited previous experience with the Dimensity 1000+ chipset (or, rather, none), so it may very well be just right.

While we don't have the standard tests for you, anecdotal data points to pretty good battery life, indeed. In 120Hz mode, we got a total of about 6 hours of screen-on time on a charge with Wi-Fi connectivity in regular usage, including an hour of gaming, 30 minutes of 1080p YouTube videos, 48 minutes of Facebook, 23 minutes of Instagram, and 28 minutes of Quora. On another occasion, we had 4:45h of SOT and 28% left at the end of the day. Naturally, with mobile data turned on, the SOT will be less, though who goes places now to need mobile data.

As for charging, in our experience, the X7 Pro with its 65W adaptor missed the 35-minute mark to full charge - the number that Realme promises. However, at 39 minutes from zero to full, we don't think that's really an issue - it's still super fast. It took 16 minutes to get to 50%, while at the half-hour we were looking at 83%.

Software

The X7 Pro is running the original version of Realme UI bolted on top of Android 10, and that's one of our main issues with the phone - by now, we should be getting Android 11 already. Then again, the X7 Pro was announced at a time when A11 wasn't even official yet, and just because we're getting it a few months later doesn't mean it'll have made the jump. An update is surely in the works, but we don't have official word on the matter.

Realme X7 Pro hands-on review

In the meantime, Realme UI v.1 is a very familiar interface. An offshoot of Oppo's ColorOS, it inherits that one's recent tendency for slightly toned down visual customization though it still does offer a comprehensive set of extra features and tweaks.

Synthetic benchmarks

The Realme X2 Pro is one of a select few devices powered by the Mediatek Dimensity 1000+ chipset, the Chinese chipmaker's top-tier offering. Manufactured on a 7nm process, the SoC packs an octa-core CPU (4x2.6GHz Cortex-A77 & 4x2.0GHz Cortex-A55) and a Mali-G77 MP9 GPU. The 1000+ has an integrated 5G modem, too, much like all of this year's high-end chipsets.

Realme X7 Pro hands-on review

As benchmark results show, the Dimensity 1000+ is a very powerful performer, though not quite at the same level as the Exynos 2100 or the Snapdragon 888. It does compare favorably with the Kirin 9000, however, as well as the SD865. Additionally, the Dimensity is vastly superior to the mass-market SD765G.

2+2 cameras on the back, no telephoto

The Realme X7 Pro has one of those camera systems we like to complain about where it's technically a quad-cam setup, but in practice, only two of those are 'real' cameras.

The main camera uses a 64MP Quad Bayer sensor that captures 16MP images by default. The lens has a 26mm equivalent focal length and an f/1.8 aperture. Standard stuff.

The ultra wide-angle camera's lens covers a 119-degree field of view and has an f/2.25 aperture - Realme is very specific about the 0.05. A 1/4" 8MP sensor does the image capture.

Realme X7 Pro hands-on review

And then there are the sort-of-cameras. You get two 2MP units, one for 'macro', the other one for depth detection. Sadly, there's no telephoto.

Over on the front, there's a 32MP selfie camera with a 26mm f/2.45 lens. This one shoots in its nominal resolution, and 32MP selfies are perhaps a bit much.

We didn't get to shoot a ton of samples on the Realme X7 Pro, but here's a handful. The first two are taken with the main camera.

The X7 Pro records video up to 4K60 with its main cam and up to 1080p30fps with the ultra-wide. We recorded a couple of quick clips with the main camera at both 4K60 and 4K30. The bit rate is the same 50Mbps for both - ample for 4K30, a little low for 4K60. Audio is treated to an opulent 320kbps.

Wrap-up

Powerful chipset, excellent display, super-fast charging on top of potentially great battery life, stereo speakers - the Realme X7 Pro has a lot going for it. We also liked the build and design more than we initially anticipated, though we can appreciate how the 'Dare to leap' insignia can remain a dealbreaker for some.

Realme X7 Pro hands-on review

The phone does lose points in our book for not having Android 11 yet. Additionally, the lack of a microSD slot means you should maybe consider the 256GB storage option, but that's not really available everywhere. Another point for consideration is the fact that there's no telephoto camera on the X7 Pro, though this is a common theme in this specific upper midrange to just-below-flagship segment, so perhaps it shouldn't be held against it.

All in all, the Realme X7 Pro appears a solid proposition for the money. It's a bit cheaper than direct competitors like the Oppo Reno5 Pro 5G and the Xiaomi Mi 10T and has its advantages over those handsets, too, though the Xiaomi has its own ways to get people excited. We haven't really reviewed any of these, however, so take this as the informed speculation that it is.
