With Android which thoroughly dominated the mobile industry, choosing the best Android smartphone is almost identical to choose the best smartphone, period. But while Android phones have few real opponents on other platforms, internal competition is intense.
Maybe the launch wasn’t planned quite like this, but either way the Oppo A74 (4G) is now official and is already listed on two stores in the Philippines. It’s also up on Oppo’s Cambodia site. Then there’s the Oppo A74 5G, which cropped up in Thailand.
Oppo A74 4G highlightsThe A74 4G has a 6.43” AMOLED display with 1080p+ resolution. The refresh rate is a standard 60 Hz, but the phone has a gaming mode that boosts the touch sampling rate from 135 Hz to 180 Hz. In terms of image quality, you get 100% sRGB and 92% DCI-P3 coverage. The fingerprint reader is built into the display.
The is powered by the Snapdragon 662 chipset, which is equipped with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB storage (this seems to be the only memory configuration). The chipset runs ColorOS 11.1 (Android 11) out of the box.
The 5G version uses the new Snapdragon 480 chipset (8 nm) instead, with the same 6/128 GB memory configuration. The 5G modem offers download speeds of up to 2.1 Gbps
Another change is that the display runs at 90 Hz with 180 Hz touch sampling rate. Also, this model claims 100% DCI-P3 coverage. However, this appears to be an LCD panel, so the fingerprint reader has moved to the side.
The Oppo A74 4G packs a 5,000 mAh battery with 33W fast charging support. The store listings are not super complete, but a leaked poster from a few days ago shows that 54% charge is reached in 30 minutes, a full charge takes 72 minutes. Then the phone is good for almost 18 hours of YouTube videos or about 10 hours of gaming.
The USB-C (USB 2.0) port is joined by a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Additional connectivity Wi-Fi and Bluetooth with aptX, but NFC is missing.
The main camera on the 4G model has a 48 MP sensor in it. It is joined by two 2 MP modules, one macro, one depth. The selfie camera on the front (punch hole) has a 16 MP sensor. Video recording is capped at 1080p @ 30 fps for both front and rear cameras.
The 4G model has a triple camera on the back
The Oppo A74 5G takes that and adds an 8 MP ultra wide-angle cam to the rear. Disappointingly, however, the 5,000 mAh battery of the 5G version only supports 18W fast charging.
The 4G model is priced PHP 12,000 ($255/€210) and is currently on pre-order with a note that shipping starts in 7 days. You can see it on Shopee and Lazada (note: Shopee has a 4% discount, Lazada doesn’t list a price yet). The phone also appears to be in stock in physical stores as well. The color options are Prism Black and Midnight Blue.
The A74 5G can be found in the Thai branches of Shopee and Lazada where it is an online exclusive. The price is set at BH 9,000 ($285/€245). The 5G version will be available in the Philippines as well, though the price is not known yet. It’s not quite clear if the 4G version will be available in Thailand.
Note: the Oppo A74 (4G) appears to be identical to the Oppo F19.
