Introduction

Tecno has a consistently growing smartphone lineup. The new Camon 19 Pro just dropped by the office for a full, in-depth review. The Camon family is Tecno's flagship line. It consists of phones with bigger displays and an increased focus on camera features and performance. The Camon 19 Pro is no exception, with an OIS-enabled 64MP main snapper with laser autofocus and a 50MP 2x telephoto camera on the back.

Tecno Camon 19 Pro review

Tecno mainly targets developing countries, which is why it has a different approach to its smartphones than the mainstream makers. The Camon series bring large screens and batteries, with a good camera experience and satisfying performance on the cheap. The price is kept even lower thanks to pre-installed partner apps and baked-in ads within the interface. This might be a deal-breaker for some, but for others - a welcome tradeoff they'd gladly make.

The Camon 19 Pro has plenty going for it beyond what we already mentioned. Its large 6.8-inch display has a 120Hz resolution. Though, unlike the Camon 18 Premier, it's just an LCD rather than an OLED. You also get a large 5,000 mAh battery with 33W fast charging and a decently-powerful MediaTek Helio G96 chipset. It should be noted that a Camon 19 Pro 5G exists as well. It is technically a different device, but it basically shares almost all of its specs with the regular Camon 19 Pro with a chipset swap to the Dimensity 810 5G. So, most of the observations we make in this review will also apply to the Camon 19 Pro 5G.

Another important point of clarification here is that the older Camon 18 Premier is not necessarily a great comparison point for the Camon 19 Pro. The Premier is a more expensive phone, allowing it to have some niceties like the AMOLED panel or the gimbal-stabilized 12MP ultrawide camera. We will do our best not to draw many comparisons between the two devices in the review.

Unboxing

Before we delve into the Camon 19 Pro itself, we should look at the retail package, which ticks all boxes. The box itself is a two-piece thick cardboard affair with a sturdy and eye-catching exterior with its two-tone design. The contents are very well protected with an actual plastic cradle for the phone itself.

Tecno Camon 19 Pro review

Tecno has always had a very rich accessory package. The bundled charger is a familiar affair for the brand. It is rated for up to 33W of output (5V@3A or 10V@3.3A). You also get a USB Type-A to Type-C cable in the box, rated for 3.3A. It is about a meter long and also wired for data.

There is also a nice pair of earphones with a mic ending on a 3.5mm jack. You will also find a soft transparent case that envelopes the phone and its camera island.

Finally, the Camon 19 Pro arrives with a thin protective film on the screen. Sure, it may not be as durable as a tempered glass shield, but it's not as cheap and smudgy as the ones we've seen pre-installed on some more popular phones.

Design

Tecno doesn't really have a consistent look and a single design language, but there are still some noteworthy similarities to be observed across current families, like the Camon 19 and the Spark 9 lines. This year, the monolithic camera islands seem to have been replaced with this distinctive large dual camera lens/hump design on the back of the phones.

Tecno Camon 19 Pro review

It is a bit polarizing around the office, but the general consensus is that the look is modern and in keeping with current trends. So Tecno has that going for it for sure.

The general shape of the Camon 19 Pro isn't particularly special. The mostly flat sides and rounded corners have a bit of an iPhone vibe to them, but the similarities are slim at best. The Camon 19 Pro is comfortable to hold, and its 204 gram body is well balanced and doesn't feel too heavy at all. Especially for its 166.8 x 74.6 x 8.6 mm size.

Tecno Camon 19 Pro review

The bezels around the display are perfectly reasonable in size. We would even say even a bit on the smaller end for what is essentially a budget phone. The punch hole for the selfie has a liberal amount of dead space around the lens, but that's perfectly reasonable for this market segment.

Tecno Camon 19 Pro review Left: Camon 19 Pro • Right: Camon 19

The Tecno Camon 19 Pro is available in two color options - Polar Blue and Eco Black. The former has that slick "oil spill" effect with a bunch of visible colors, depending on how the light hits it. The black one is much tamer in that regard. It looks kind of blue at some angles.

The finish on the back is silky to the touch and doesn't attract or retain too many fingerprints, which is good. The vertical Camon writing on the back seems to be embossed, which makes for a nice effect.

Overall, the phone looks good without unnecessarily trying to punch above its weight class and imitate any fancy materials or construction.

Build quality

As we said, the Camon 19 Pro feels comfortable in its pretty much entirely plastic skin. There is a noticeable color and finish difference between the back panel and the middle frame, but both are still like Apple popularized "unapologetically plastic".

Tecno Camon 19 Pro review

The Camon 19 Pro uses a standard "sandwich" design. The back panel is definitely plastic, which means you do have to take care of it since the finish is prone to scratching. We managed to scuff up our review unit fairly quickly.

That is not to say that it feels flimsy, though. On the contrary, the back panel is nice and firm with practically no flex and none of that annoying "hollow" feeling underneath it.

The middle frame is also all plastic, which allows it to be one solid piece, uninterrupted by any antenna lines. Its finish is a bit glossier than the back panel, which makes for a nice visual contrast. That, however, also means that it retains grease a lot easier and will almost constantly be dirty.

Tecno Camon 19 Pro review

There is no mention of glass in the PR materials anywhere on the Camon 19 Pro. It is safe to assume that its front side is plastic too, which is a bit of a bummer. At least the phone ships with a pre-installed plastic screen protector. We would have preferred glass, but it is still better than nothing.

The Camon 19 Pro, unfortunately, lacks any formal ingress protection rating. That being said, though, a big red rubber gasket is clearly included around the inside of the SIM card tray, which means that it probably has the potential to survive some of the elements.

Controls and connectivity

The Camon 19 Pro has a standard control scheme and layout. Its physical buttons are all on the right-hand side. These include a volume rocker, which offers nice travel and tactile feedback and a fingerprint/power button combo.

Tecno Camon 19 Pro review

The latter is an actual button that can be clicked, though you don't really need to click it to unlock the phone since the fingerprint reader part is always on. The reader itself is a traditional capacitive one that works well and is both snappy and accurate. It is a bit on the slim side, which diminishes its usability a bit.

Tecno Camon 19 Pro review

Also worth noting - the position of the power button is not ideal as it is way too low vertically on the frame. Perhaps that will be less of an issue if you have smaller hands, but we found the Tecno Camon 19 Pro a bit hard to unlock.

Tecno Camon 19 Pro review

The top bezel of the Camon 19 Pro is mostly empty. Well, depending on whether you consider the earpiece grill as sitting on the front or the top of the phone. It is kind of in the middle, honestly and very well hidden. The very end of the same grill also houses the light sensor in a very minimalistic fashion.

Tecno Camon 19 Pro review

The bottom bezel is a lot busier. There is a single, bottom-firing speaker on one side, a 3.5mm audio jack, and a main microphone on the other. The USB Type-C port in the middle is wired for USB 2.0 data transfer, which means a maximum of 480 Mbps. It also has USB OTG functionality for attaching things like a USB thumb drive or HID devices like a mouse and keyboard. We tested all that, and it works well. There is no advanced USB Alt-mode functionality beyond that. No video out or anything like that.

Tecno Camon 19 Pro review

Speaking of things that are absent - there is no notification LED on the Camon 19 Pro, which is not surprising since it's been the norm for some time now.

On the flip side, the Camon 19 Pro does seem to have a full set of actual sensors instead of virtual ones. There is an icm42631 accelerometer, a qmc6308 magnetometer, a compass, an icm42631 gyroscope, a gravity sensor and an stk31860 light sensor. All of them seem to work just fine. The Elliptic Labs proximity sensor seems to be polled at a slightly slower rate by the system, so it might take a couple of seconds for the display to turn off during calls. Nothing major, though.

Tecno Camon 19 Pro review

In terms of connectivity, beyond the USB we already mentioned, the Camon 19 Pro has Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth 5.2 with LE, GPS, FM radio and NFC with Google Pay support. It is a dual-SIM device with two nano-SIM slots and dual 4G standby. The one notable omission is an SD card slot.

Spacious 6.8-inch LCD

In keeping with its pedigree, the Camon 19 Pro has a fairly large 6.8-inch display at its disposal. With a resolution of 1080 x 2460 pixels that works out to about 395 ppi - perfectly sharp both on paper and in person.

Tecno Camon 19 Pro review

The particular panel Tecno uses is pretty average and fails to impress in any specific aspect. It managed a maximum brightness of 479 nits in our standardized testing, which is usable but far from ideal in sunlight.

Tecno Camon 19 Pro review

The Camon 19 Pro lacks any "max auto" mode to get higher brightness. You are stuck with what is achievable by maxing out the brightness slider. On a more positive note, contrast isn't too bad for an LCD with low light bleed in blacks.

The Camon 19 Pro lacks any kind of color modes, settings or adjustments. You are stuck with a singular profile that seems to target the DCI-P3 color space and, to its credit, manages to be quite wide in its color reproduction. Color accuracy, however, is very low. Tecno tuned the panel to be noticeably cold with a pervasive blue tint. Reds are a little boosted, too, with just the green channel lacking a bit behind. It's not a bad look in person, but definitely far from accurate.

Expectedly, the Camon 19 Pro doesn't have any HDR support on its display. In fact, in software, it reports no HDR decoding capabilities at all.

On a more positive note, it is certified on the highest Widevine L1 level, which means it should theoretically get to stream content at HD and higher resolutions. That being said, we ran into trouble with Netflix on the phone. It is not available through any of the app stores on the phone, and after sideloading the APK, it only offered SD content and claimed the phone has Widevine L3.

That's not a huge shock, though, since Netflix has always operated with its own whitelists of devices. Hopefully, the situation changes eventually for the Camon 19 Pro.

High refresh rate handling

The Camon 19 Pro has a 120Hz refresh rate panel. Straight off the bat, we'd like to mention that this is far from a great LCD when it comes to pixel response time. In fact, the pixels are very sluggish, which produces noticeable blur and smearing while scrolling, particularly on finer things like text. The selected refresh rate does not seem to affect the response time. It's still usable, but just not what we've come to expect from a modern panel.

Tecno Camon 19 Pro review

The Camon 19 Pro has a total of three refresh rate modes: 60Hz, 120Hz and "Auto-switch refresh rate". 60Hz is self-explanatory. It is just a fixed refresh rate mode. 120Hz works a bit differently, though. Using it, you get 120Hz in the entirety of the system UI.

Third-party apps like those from Google are a bit of a mixed bag. Some run at 120Hz, others at 90Hz or even 60Hz. It varies on a per-app basis with no real rhyme or reason.

As for the "Auto-switch refresh rate" mode, it's nothing too fancy. Tecno seemingly lacks any real dynamic refresh rate based on what is currently on screen. Instead, the auto mode simply relies on different conditions that determine the refresh rate to run an app at the start. Once again, the UI is pretty much locked at 120Hz.

But this time, many first-party apps drop down to a lower refresh rate.

The same is true for third-party apps. The auto mode is more aggressive in lowering the refresh rate since that happens more frequently with many more apps.

The Camon 19 Pro handles high refresh rate gaming like a champ, which is great to see. We tried a few titles in 120Hz mode, and all of them were happy to render at more than 60fps.

Again, the auto mode proved too aggressive in its refresh rate, downgrading with half of the games we tried running at 60Hz. Hence, you should just stick to the 120Hz mode while playing a high refresh rate-capable game.

Overall, while Tecno's high refresh rate handling is on the simpler side, we are happy to report that it mostly works as expected and has the basics down. That's a lot more than can be said for many of its contemporary competitors. We just wish Tecno had opted for a slightly better overall panel on the Camon 19 Pro.

Battery life

The Camon 19 Pro has a big 5,000 mAh battery pack. The Helio G96 is also generally proven itself historically as an efficient chip. The synergy between the two facts is obvious in the Camon 19 Pro, which scored an excellent battery endurance of 121 hours.

Tecno Camon 19 Pro review

Not only did the Camon 19 Pro do a great job with off-screen standby and call tests, but it also aced the on-screen ones. LCDs might be falling ever out of favor compared to OLEDs for a number of good reasons, but it's hard to argue with the consistency when it comes to endurance expectations. Regardless of whether you are watching a dark movie or browsing mostly white websites, you can expect your phone to last roughly the same as is the case with the Camon 19 Pro.

Our battery tests were automated thanks to SmartViser, using its viSerDevice app. The endurance rating denotes how long the battery charge will last you if you use the device for an hour of telephony, web browsing, and video playback daily. More details can be found here.

Video test carried out in 60Hz refresh rate mode. Web browsing test is done at the display's highest refresh rate whenever possible. Refer to the respective reviews for specifics. To adjust the endurance rating formula to match your own usage patterns, check out our all-time battery test results chart, where you can also find all phones we've tested.

Charging

The Camon 19 Pro is a relatively speedy charger with the bundled 33W adapter.

Tecno Camon 19 Pro review

We never expected industry-leading speeds and are happy to see the Camon 19 Pro perform about on par and even slightly better than the last Camon Pro we reviewed, the Camon 17 Pro. Remember, the Premier tier devices from Tecno are generally of a higher tier and tend to charge faster.

Speaker

The Camon 19 Pro has a single bottom-firing speaker. It's not spectacular in any way, but it gets the job done. It doesn't get too loud, scoring just an "Average" rating in our standardized testing. Frequency response is all over the place, but on a positive tone, voices come out pretty clean. Also, distortion isn't excessive even at high volume.

Use the Playback controls to listen to the phone sample recordings (best use headphones). We measure the average loudness of the speakers in LUFS. A lower absolute value means a louder sound. A look at the frequency response chart will tell you how far off the ideal "0db" flat line is the reproduction of the bass, treble, and mid frequencies. You can add more phones to compare how they differ. The scores and ratings are not comparable with our older loudspeaker test. Learn more about how we test here.

HiOS 8.6 on top of Android 12

The Camon 19 Pro runs on the latest Android 12 with Tecno's in-house HiOS 8.6 on top. Tecno has been running and refining its own skin for some time now, which we've generally found to be quite good in the past, with a few on and off caveats here and there. These mostly come down to pre-installed bloat and ads. But, credit, where credit is due, the situation on both fronts appears to have gotten a lot better. The Camon 19 didn't annoy us with pesky notifications and pushy offers nearly as much as some of its predecessors. The experience is actually pretty clean.

Tecno Camon 19 Pro review

That's not to say there isn't a whole bunch of pre-installed apps and utilities. Tecno is still sticking to its traditions of developing and deploying its own set of apps to cover the basic features. You get an in-house gallery and video player and an app store, even two depending on how you count them. These can still get annoying at times, but we can understand the angle Tecno is coming from.

The lockscreen has a single shortcut in the bottom right to access the camera. Once you're past that, you arrive at a standard homescreen interface. The leftmost pane, called the Zero screen, holds cards with suggested news, weather and quotes widgets and an app usage widget. You can disable the Zero screen in the 'Desktop settings'. There's an app drawer by default which you can access from the old-school A-Z orange icon at the bottom or with an upward swipe from the bottom.

Tecno has a long-standing selection of advanced features that generally get carried forward from older models. All of the custom bits from the Camon 16, 17 and 18 families are still present here. That includes the Game mode with all the settings, statistics and parental controls. There is also a Smart panel with slide-from-the-side shortcuts.

Tecno Camon 19 Pro review

Social Turbo toolset is rather interesting (a WhatsApp enhancer of sorts) - it can change your voice, enhance your face during video calls, record your WhatsApp calls, and allow you to read messages without marking them as Read.

MemFusion is a new addition to the features list. It's just Tecno's came for virtual RAM. The Camon 19 Pro has 8GB of physical RAM chips on board and can extend that up to a total of 13GB with another 5GB of virtual memory.

The CarIcare aftersales assistance utility is also onboard, and you can fire it anytime if you encounter problems with your phone.

If you want even more details about the HiOS, you can learn more in the software section of the Camon 16 Premier review. All the extra features outlined there are still present and relevant.

Performance and benchmarks

The Camon 19 uses the MediaTek Helio G96 chipset just like the Camon 18 Premier. It is fabricated on the 12nm FinFET manufacturing process from TSMC, just like the previous G9x chips.

The Helio G96 has the same octa-core CPU as the Helio G90, G90T (Camon 16 Premier) and G95 (Camon 17 Pro) - it packs two high-performance Cortex-A76 cores ticking at 2.05GHz and six energy-efficient Corext-A55 cores working at 2.0GHz.

Tecno Camon 19 Pro review

The G96 has a GPU from the Valhalla generation by ARM - the Mali-G57. Unlike the previous G9x chips, here we have a dual-core configuration instead of a quad-core, so a drop in GPU numbers is expected compared to some of those older chips. The new GPU does, however, bring about support for 120Hz refresh rate, which the Camon 19 makes great use of with high refresh rate gaming, so we can't complain too much about the core count downgrade.

The Camon 19 Pro is available in two memory configurations - 8GB RAM plus 128GB storage and 8GB RAM plus 256GB storage. We have the smaller of the two for this review.

Let's kick things off with some CPU testing and GeekBench. The Camon 19 Pro and its Helio G96 chipset find themselves nicely in line with what we've come to expect from the G96 chip. No surprises there, which means Techo has done a good job in software.

Generally speaking, the Helio G96 does better in an all-core multi-threaded scenario coming within a stone's throw to chips like the MediaTek Dimensity 810 and the Snapdragon 732G and even beating the Dimensity 7xx line.

Its single-core capabilities are less impressive, but it still finds itself smack in the middle of the pack of competing devices, which is good to see.

AnTuTu and its much more compound benchmarking set is even more favorable towards the Camon 19 Pro as a whole. Mind you, AnTuTu takes into account things like storage and its performance as well for a much broader UX picture.

The Camon 19 Pro still gets beat out by Snapdragon 695-equipped devices like the Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G or the Realme 9 Pro. That's an ongoing trend in these rankings, so perhaps one of those would be a better fit if you are after the best possible performance for your buck. Better still, why not the Samsung Galaxy M52 5G and its Snapdragon 778G, which tends to be a league above the competition in raw power.

The Camon 19 Pro retains its overall poll position in GFXBench graphic tests as well. That is to say that it's not a pack leader, but its Mali-G57 dual-core GPU still manages decent overall performance. About what we would expect from it.

Naturally, going down the test stack to lower the difficulty scenario, we get higher FPS numbers. Nothing even remotely in the "playable" realm in real life, but that's kind of the point of synthetic loads - they are unrealistically tough. In practice, the Camon 19 Pro handles most modern titles apart from the most demanding AAA ones with grace. Any modern mobile game engine worth its salt tends to be very accommodating to the levels of mid-range performance the Camon 19 Pro can put out.

We also remind you that fps comparisons across different devices in GFXBench are only really valid in off-screen rendering, where the native display resolution of the device does not affect the render resolution. The Camon 19 has a higher than FullHD native resolution, which is not really helping the numbers.

3DMark usually offers a more streamlined and clear-to-read performance delta, and we once again find the Camon 19 Pro smack in the middle of the pack. One observation would be that it does well for the G96 chipset that it carries. However, expectedly, that chip gets outperformed by the likes of the older Helio G95 with its four GPU cores as well as the Snapdragon 695 and 778G. No surprises there either.

The Camon 19 Pro makes the most out of its Helio G96 chipset. It might not be the fastest chip around, nor is it particularly current, given that we already saw it in last year's Camon 18 Premier, among many other phones, but it is still a solid and modern part that delivers plenty of performance for daily tasks and a nice set of additional features. In practice, the Camon 19 Pro feels responsive and has plenty of "oomph". The thing that is actually holding back and spoiling the fluidity of its experience is the relatively sluggish display pixel response time rather than any shortage in computing power.

Triple camera setup with OIS and a telephoto

Techo offers intriguing camera setups, particularly in the Camon line of phones. The Camon 19 Pro is no different. From a hardware standpoint, the Camon 19 Pro looks impressive with a 64MP main camera with OIS and Laser auto focus, a whopping 50MP 2x telephoto camera and a large 32MP selfie.

Tecno Camon 19 Pro review

The Camon 19 Pro was nice enough to have its camera sensors listed in internal settings files. The 64MP, f/1.6 primary camera uses a Samsung S5KGWB sensor - 1/1.7", 0.8µm. Tecno implemented it with a couple of extras like OIS and laser autofocus for an even better experience. The sensor also has RGBW arrangement, replacing part of the green pixels of a traditional RGGB array with white ones. The alleged benefit from that is the better quality of light captured by the sensor. The camera also has a real glass lens element instead of a plastic one.

The 50mm 50MP, f/2.0 telephoto camera is using a Samsung S5KJN1 sensor - 1/2.76", 0.64µm. It is colloquially known as the ISOCELL JN1 and is fairly popular as well. It comes with phase detection autofocus in the Camon 19 Pro. Last and least around back is a 2MP depth sensor. Tecno decided not to include an ultrawide.

The 32MP, f/2.4 selfie camera uses a rather exotic Samsung S5KGD2 sensor -1/3.4", 0.8µm. We've seen this particular sensor in the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G and the Tecno Camon 18 Premier again in the selfie cam. The sensor has fixed focus and no other fancy extras to note.

The camera app is straightforward - aside from the full-auto photo mode being called AI Cam, things are mostly as expected. You can swipe down on the viewfinder to bring the top row of icons closer - something Techno calls one-handed mode.

Tecno Camon 19 Pro review

Night mode is now available for both the main camera and the telephoto, which wasn't the case on the Camon 18 Premier.

The 64MP primary camera uses a Quad-Bayer pixel setup and hence captures 16MP stills by default. These look very clean but the colors appear a bit less saturated than what we are used to. The contrast rendering also appears rather unusual.

The Camon 19 Pro has an Ai color enhancer toggle in its camera app, which is off by default. In this mode, it saturates colors better but they appear off - especially greens. Still, if you prefer more "pop", the toggle is there.

The main camera can be set to 64MP mode. It works quite well and overall manages to deliver more fine detail in the final shots. Colors remain consistent, too.

With the 64MP stills, there is less processing overall. This makes for softer lines and edges and less noise on surfaces.

The Camon 19 Pro is fairly quick to capture 64MP stills as well, making the mode quite useful overall.

The main camera does alright with portraits. Subject detection and separation are very good, and so is the quality of the background blur. You also get a number of "studio lighting portrait" modes to play around with beyond the simple bokeh one with intensity sliders and the whole nine yards.

The 50MP 2x telephoto camera captures stills in just around 12.5MP by default and they are likeable. There is plenty of detail and colors are okay. The overall color and contrast, however, are slightly mismatched with the main camera.

Selfies

The selfie camera on the Camon 19 Pro looks quite impressive on paper. Its 32MP sensor, while not particularly popular, has been used by some of vivo's flagship X series devices, as well as some Xiaomi and Samsung phones. Technically, the Samsung S5KGD2 uses a Quad-Bayer setup, meaning it should produce around 8MP photos by default. However, ordinary selfies from the Camon 19 Pro come out in 32MP.

While generally good with plenty of detail and nice skin tones, these selfies have a certain softness to them, especially in skin texture. Our working theory is that Tecno is upscaling 8MP stills for some reason.

A theory further backed up by the fact that selfie portraits get saved in 8MP and tend to look sharper to our eye with better-defined skin features and texture.

Video quality

The main camera on the Camon 19 Pro captures videos at up to 1440p resolution (2560 x 1440 pixels) at 30fps. That's not an overly common resolution to see these days, but it's still a good step above FullHD as it is essentially four times HD (720p). Videos get captured in a standard h.264 AVC video stream at a respectable 50 Mbps or so and a stereo 48 kHz AAC audio stream inside an MP4 container. So, pretty much the typical setup.

These 1440p clips look good with a solid amount of detail and good, even if slightly muted colors.

Here's the main camera of the Camon 19 Pro in 1440p in our video compare tool.

The 50MP telephoto is capped at 1080p@30 for its video capture. These clips also look very decent in terms of detail, keeping in mind the FullHD resolution. Just like with stills, this camera tends to have a slightly brighter exposure, which affects color rendition. Overall the videos are quite clean.

The selfie camera is also capped at 1440p for video capture. These videos look pretty great, with plenty of detail and nice skin tone and texture.

As for stabilization, the main camera on the Camon 19 Pro has OIS, but it seems to be doing very little for video stabilization, with the most jarring shakes and stutters left in the final clip. The same is also true for forage from the telephoto and selfie cameras as well. You can check out samples in the playlist.

The Camon 19 Pro does have EIS. You can toggle for all three cameras. It does noticeably smooth out big bumps and shakes but does nothing for the annoying little shakes that make for blurry footage akin to focus hunting or wind vibration. Interestingly enough, the shaky artifacts are almost non-existent in EIS-enabled footage from the selfie camera, so it might actually be a focusing issue. Regardless, we can't really praise the EIS.

Low-light camera quality

16MP photos from the main camera are about what we would expect from the hardware at hand. There is a good level of detail, and darker areas are generally well exposed.

Colors vary from natural to a bit yellow or orange from shot to shot, which means that white balance consistency isn't the greatest. More than a few of our test shots have a notable color tinge.

While there is a lot of detail, it is also clear that much is lost to the noise reduction algorithms, which is understandable. The Camon 19 Pro also struggles a bit with containing light sources and they are blown out.

The Tecno Camon 19 Pro has an automatic night mode that consistently kicks in on its own even though it's not flagship level.

Beyond that, there is also a Super night mode as a separate entry in the camera carousel. It sharpens up shots from the main camera considerably and consistently.

This mode renders light sources much better. Textures are also much improved in sharpness and contrast. The shadows don't get much of a boost, however, and are even darker.

The Camon 19 Pro takes a good 6 seconds or so per Super night shot, but it might be worth it to you if you are not into the softer, less contrasty look of the regular mode.

12.5MP low-light shots from the telephoto camera generally keep up well with the main camera in terms of detail and colors. Though the color rendition is noticeably different, it is still good in its own right. Darker areas are a bit softer and generally have less detail with this camera, and light sources are frequently blown out.

Super night mode on the telephoto camera is even more aggressive than on the main camera. Most of the time, these shots look too artificially oversharpened. It's not necessarily the worst look when zoomed out, but once you start pixel-peeping, the illusion of actual detail starts to fall apart quickly. Light sources are handled much better in this mode, though, so we'll just call it a mixed bag.

The 32MP selfie camera does a decent job in low light without being overly impressive in any way. Skin texture doesn't really come through, and most of the finer details in the background are lost as well. At least the skin tones and general color reproduction are pleasant.

There is Super night mode for the selfie camera as well. It sharpens up shots considerably through a mixture of capturing a bit more detail in some areas and then aggressively sharpening almost every line in the frame.

It can be a somewhat jarring look but does also have a certain appeal, especially when zoomed out. If you like the look better, it's worth waiting a few seconds for night mode to do its thing. Plus, you end up with much more manageable 8MP stills in this mode instead of huge 32MP files.

Low-light video from the main camera looks great. Detail is plenty for 1440p. There is very little noise, colors look true to life and light sources are well contained.

The telephoto camera also offers solid low-light video performance. It particularly shines in the Camon 19 Pro's budget price segment. These videos are expectedly a bit noisier than those from the main camera, and light isn't handled quite as well. You also don't get the benefit of OIS, but generally, we are quite pleased with the performance.

Competition

The Tecno Camon 19 Pro is very competitively priced. You should be able to pick a base 8GB plus 128GB one for just over EUR 200/$200, depending on the market. However, that particular budget price segment is very actively targeted by many players on the mobile market. Xiaomi, for one, has more than a few offers. The Redmi Note 11 Pro will set you back about as much. It is also based around the same Helio G96 chipset. But that's where the similarities stop. Some of its highlights include a 6.67-inch Super AMOLED 120Hz display, stereo speakers, IP53 rating, a 108MP main camera and a big 5,000 mAh battery with 67W fast charging.

Tecno Camon 19 Pro review

You could also save a few bucks and go for the vanilla Redmi Note 11. It gets you a 90Hz AMOLED panel, Snapdragon 680 chipset, 50MP main camera, the same IP53 ingress protection and stereo speakers and a 5,000 mAh battery with 33W charging.

Alternatively, you could spend just a bit more than the Camon 19 Pro costs and go for the Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G, which is basically a chipset upgrade over the Redmi Note 11 Pro. Its Snapdragon 695 not only brings 5G to the table, in case that's a priority but also makes for notably better battery endurance.

If that is a bit outside your budget, there is always the Poco line. Particularly the Poco M4 Pro with its 90Hz AMOLED, stereo speakers, IP53 rating and 5,000 mAh battery with 33W charging, among other things. It is also based on the Helio G96 chip, and it's only missing a telephoto camera, which is typical with phones in this price range. It offers a very similar experience to the Camon 19 Pro.

Again, if 5G is a priority, there is an alternative in the Poco M4 Pro 5G. However, it delivers 5G at the cost of other specs compromises and wouldn't necessarily be our first recommendation.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro Samsung Galaxy A23 Xiaomi Poco M4 Pro Realme 9
Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro • Samsung Galaxy A23 • Xiaomi Poco M4 Pro • Realme 9

Samsung also has a bunch of really interesting offers around this price point. If you can spring a bit extra and get the Galaxy A33 5G, you shouldn't hesitate. Not only does it come with a 90Hz Super AMOLED display and stereo speakers, but it also has full IP67 ingress protection. That's really hard to find on a budget. A more fair price competitor to the Camon 19 Pro, however, would be the Galaxy A23. With it, however, you will have to settle for an LCD like on the Tecno, among other things.

If you can live with a slightly older model and the shorter potential software support that entails, go for the Samsung Galaxy A32 instead. It has the 90Hz Super AMOLED, a potent camera setup and arguably a better, more efficient chipset compared to the new Galaxy A33.

Realme has its "9 family" in roughly the same price range as the Camon 19 Pro. To be fair, the Realme 9 Pro is a bit over budget. But it's one of those devices that brings 5G connectivity at the expense of other specs, like settling for an LCD display. The vanilla Realme 9, however, is an excellent alternative to the Camon 19 Pro. Some of its highlights include a 90Hz Super AMOLED display, 108MP primary camera and a large 5,000 mAh battery with 33W charging.

Our verdict

The Tecno Camon 19 Pro is a well-rounded budget phone. However, it fails to impress or excel in any particular department. Seeing how it is part of the Camon line, a greater focus on camera hardware and performance is sort of implied. Indeed the Camon 19 Pro offers a telephoto camera which is a rarity at its price range. This particular one even performs quite well. Though, having said that, we are not sure that it is that superior over a 2x digital zoom with a modern high-resolution Quad-Bayer camera, which undermines its added value in practical terms quite a bit.

Tecno Camon 19 Pro review

The unfortunate reality is that the Camon 19 Pro is faced with many appealing competitors on the current market and just fails to outshine most of them in any real way.

That being said, it all ultimately comes down to pricing. If the Camon 19 Pro is a good deal or on a great promo in your home market, then you shouldn't hesitate too much to pick one up. If that's not the case, definitely shop around more.
