Motorola made its big media day mostly about its best-seller Moto G-series, focusing on the ever more flagship-looking Moto G6 Plus, Moto G6 Play and plain Moto G6. But the Moto E5 and the Moto E5 Plus which were also announced today are too well-rounded to be ignored.
The Moto E5 Plus and Moto E5 build on the Moto E4 formula with 2018 features like an 18:9 screen and a nicer design, even in the lower tier.
It all starts with the Moto E5 Plus, which looks so good on paper, it might make more sense to buy than the new Moto G6 Play. Compared to the G6 sibling, the Moto E5 Plus has a slightly bigger screen (5.99-inch vs 5.7-inch) and a huge 5,000mAh battery (that makes 2 days of endurance look easy) and it is cheaper to buy.
The Moto E5 Plus also brings a nice-sounding snapper to the table - a 12MP f/2.0 unit with reasonably sized 1.25 µm pixels. The selfie cam will either be 8MP or 5MP depending on where you live in the world.

To finalize things, the Moto E5 Plus has a distinctive design, which is an impressive feat for an all-plastic phone. Lenovo have tried to spruce it up a bit by adding what they call a reflective wave pattern to the back panel.
It’s glossy and a fingerprint magnet, but at least it will look nicer than your run-of-the-mill entry-level smartphone.
The Moto E5 Plus will go on sale in May and June in Europe, the Americas, and the Asia Pacific for a starting price of €170.
Moving on to the Moto E5. Think of it as the more conventional entry-level proposition by Motorola. It lacks the flashy reflective plastic and sheds 0.7-inch of screen estate and 1,000mAh of battery power but still makes enough to be considered a good bargain.
Some might prefer the more constrained look of the matte plastic and will likely find an 18:9 5.7-inch screen a perfectly adequate size. And even with 1,000mAh less, the 4,000mAh battery of the Moto E5 is enough to give any user confidence outside of power cable reach.

However all of those savings amount to a measly €20 discount from the Moto E5 Plus at €150. It’s well worth it to spend that little bit of extra just for the bigger battery.
Before we continue we have to get one thing out of the way. The third member of the Moto E5 family, the Moto E5 Play wasn’t at the venue in Brazil. It's a US-only model so we’ll save that hands-on for another day.

Motorola Moto E5 Plus
Perspective will play a key part of the hands-on experience with the Moto E5 Plus. If you’ve just handled either the Moto G6 or the Moto G6 Plus then you’ll feel a bit underwhelmed by the new Moto E5 Plus.
But if you’re acquainted with it with a frame of mind you will be surprised by two things - how nice it feels for the money and how light it feels, despite its mammoth battery.
The Moto E5 Plus looks nicer than its plastic build would suggest. It catches the light in interesting ways and has a shimmering quality to it when you move it in your hand. This effect works best on the gold finish.
However the beautiful image deteriorates quickly once you start to handle the Moto E5 Plus. Fingerprint smudges quickly ruin the posh look of the device. The dark blue model hides smudges more adeptly but still becomes a gross oily mess in a matter of mere minutes.

Still, we managed to return the Moto E5 Plus to its visual glory with a simple wipe on the ol’ t-shirt, so it’s fine.
The screen is good for the price point but otherwise unimpressive on its own. The size and tall aspect go along way to making it feel like the Moto E5 Plus has a big screen in a small body but the HD+ resolution of 720x1440px is stretched to a slightly thin 270ppi.
Pixels aren’t immediately apparent unless you go peeping for them and colors and contrast are very good. Once again, at this price point the Moto E5 Plus has one of the better screens.
Moto E5 Plus
Despite its huge battery, the Moto E5 Plus feels light. Surprisingly light even. This may be the first time we call a nearly-200g phone light, and that simply is surprising to us too. We can’t wait to see what kind of endurance we’ll get from this Big Bertha of batteries.
People familiar with the Moto E4 Plus will sense a higher level of craftsmanship and polish in the Moto E5 Plus. Motorola have done a great job of making its entry level feel that much more midrange and the Moto E5 Plus is the flagbearer of that improvement.
The Moto E5 Plus is not an expensive phone, and it doesn’t feel like one. But it doesn’t feel cheap either, far from it.

You’d imagine that the Moto E5 comes off as a cheaper device than the Moto E5 Plus because of its less flamboyant body but it doesn’t. It looks tamer, more reserved, but every bit as impressive for its price.
If anything, the coarser matte finish of the Moto E5 handles fingerprints better than the glossy surface of the E5 Plus. During our lengthy session of touching both Motos, the Moto E5 remained almost pristine while the Moto E5 Plus turned into a smudge-fest.
The screen on the Moto E5 is 0.2-inches smaller than the 6-incher on the Moto E5 Plus but the difference isn’t substantial by any means. If anything the pixel density gains a few points. It has the same adequate if unremarkable quality as the panel on the bigger phone.

And if the Moto E5 Plus felt surprisingly light for a nearly-200g phone, with the Moto E5 and its 4,000mAh battery the sentiment deepens. It’s not a heavy phone by any means.
It is thick, however - something that’s true of the Plus model as well, but is felt more on the shorter Moto E5. We can imagine that many people would take a thicker phone in return for impressive battery life, especially at this price point.

The Moto E5 will become available in Europe, Latin America and Asia Pacific in about 1 month’s time. The price will be €150.
