Lenovo updated its device upgrade roadmap recently and it's bad news for owners of its Phab devices. Neither the Phab, Phab Plus, Phab2, Phab2 Plus, nor the Phab2 Pro will be updated to Android Nougat.

While this might come as a disappointing revelation for owners of the original Phab from 2015 (which launched with Android Lollipop), my heart is really going out to the poor souls who bought a Phab2 Pro — the "world's first Tango-enabled smartphone." This was launched with Android Marshmallow, last November (i.e. after Nougat was already available), for $500.

Lenovo hasn't been the strongest performer in terms of software rollouts in recent years, something which will hopefully change once it ditches its Vibe UI for stock Android, but it's nonetheless a surprise to see that not a single phone from that series will receive a single major Android update.

When it comes to Lenovo's low-cost handsets on that list, like its Vibe series, the lack of an update might be more easily swallowed. But the Phab2 Pro… really? Not only was it an expensive flagship, but it was billed as a handset built with the future in mind. It's Tango-compatible — a technology that's even now still in its infancy — and Lenovo writes on its website that the phone "opens the door to an amazing array of next generation games, conveniences, and more."

If that door was ever open, it seems like another has just been closed. On the handset's owners' faces. Hard.
