A teaser for a Huawei phone with a circular camera cutout. Huawei

  • Huawei has posted a teaser image of a phone with a circular camera cutout.
  • The manufacturer has since said it would reveal more information on December 3.
  • It's believed by some that the phone in question could be the Huawei Nova 4.

It feels like just the other day that we saw the first Android phones with notches. Since then, we've seen companies adopt slider designs and other eclectic form factors instead. Now, it looks like circular camera cutouts are the next step in the march towards a true bezel-less design.

Huawei has posted a teaser of a phone with a circular camera cutout on its Weibo page, with the camera "island" in the top-left corner of the screen. The teaser image also seems to reference the month of December. Huawei has since told The Verge it would reveal more information on December 3.

Earlier rumors suggest the phone could be the Huawei Nova 4, although it would be a rather quick turnaround time for this. The Nova 3 was only

launched in July, so December would be less than six months after the previous device.

We don't know much else about the new phone, but a purportedly leaked photo shows a device with the aforementioned camera cutout and a headphone jack. The Nova series is usually an upper mid-range offering, so we're expecting either a Kirin 980 or Kirin 710 chipset, as well as a rear-facing dual-camera setup. There's only one camera cutout in the teaser image, so we're not expecting the Nova 3's dual selfie camera pairing.

Editor's Pick

It's not the first time we heard about this type of camera cutout either, as Samsung confirmed it was working on the technology (calling it an Infinity-O display). Furthermore, serial Samsung tipster Ice Universe claims the first phone with an Infinity-O display will be the Galaxy A8S.

We do have to wonder how long Huawei and Samsung will stick with this solution. It seems like the next logical step is to add a camera under the screen (Samsung has already confirmed its work in this area). But the technology isn't quite ready for prime-time just yet.
