Introduction

The Realme mid-range series are being refreshed every six months, and the new Series 7 is coming right on schedule. Both the Realme 7 Pro and Realme 7 are more like different takes on Series 6 instead of full-blown upgrades. And today, we are going to explore the European version of the Realme 7 Pro.

Realme 7 Pro review

Indeed, the Realme 7 Pro is hardly an update over the Realme 6 Pro. While it does bring a Super AMOLED screen, it's a smaller panel and omits high refresh rate support. Realme has made various polls on the social networks asking users to choose between a 60Hz OLED and 90HZ LCD, and the people have spoken.

The Realme 7 Pro has also lost the telephoto camera and the ultrawide selfie shooter, but it gained new features like stereo speakers and 65W SuperDart Charging.

While the phone has shrunk in size a bit due to its .2" smaller screen, it didn't lose any of the battery capacity - just on the contrary. The Realme 7 Pro is powered by a 4,500 mAh battery - up from 4,300 mAh in the 6 Pro. As we mentioned, it supports 65W fast charging, which should get you from flat to full in 34 mins. We'll see about that in a bit.

Realme 7 Pro review

The camera setup on the back is your typical quad-camera on the cheap - a 64MP primary, am 8MP ultrawide, a 2MP macro, and a 2MP depth sensor. There is no telephoto shooter here, but the 64MP snapper should be enough for some high-quality digital zooming.

The selfie camera now contains only one shooter in a rather small punch hole within the screen, and we like it this way better than the dual camera cutout.

So, here is the complete Realme 7 Pro specs sheet. As we said - don't expect a slew of upgrades - the Realme 7 Pro even packs the same Snapdragon 720G chip as the Realme 6 Pro. There are just a few tweaks here and there that made sense for the people that voted for them on the social networks.

Realme 7 Pro specs

  • Body: 160.9 x 74.3 x 8.7mm , 182g; Gorilla Glass 3+ front, plastic back and frame, water-repellent coating.
  • Screen: 6.4" Super AMOLED, FHD+ (1080 x 2400px) resolution, 60Hz.
  • Camera: Primary: 64MP Quad-Bayer, f/1.8 aperture, 0.8µm pixel size, 4K video; Ultra-wide: 8MP, f/2.3 aperture, 1.12µm pixel size, 1080p video; Macro: 2MP f/2.4, 1.75µm pixel size, 720p video; Depth sensor: 2MP mono camera;.
  • Front camera: 32MP f/2.5 aperture, 1080p video.
  • Chipset: Snapdragon 720G (8 nm): Octa-core (2x2.3 GHz Kryo 465 Gold & 6x1.8 GHz Kryo 465 Silver), Adreno 618 GPU.
  • Memory: 6GB/128GB, 8GB/128GB, expandable via microSD card
  • OS: Android 10, Realme UI.
  • Battery: 4,500 mAh, 65W SuperDart Charge.
  • Connectivity: 4G LTE; Dual SIM; Dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.1, NFC, GPS, USB Type-C 2.0.
  • Misc: Under-display fingerprint reader, stereo speakers.

The only major omission in this budget mid-ranger is the 90Hz refresh rate, but it's a tough job having it all. If people wanted this, who are we to disagree, right?

Unboxing the Realme 7 Pro

The Realme 7 Pro comes in a yellow paper box that contains the usual - a 65W SuperDart charger and a compatible 6.5A-compatible USB-C cable.

Realme 7 Pro review

The phone is also bundled with a transparent silicone case if you ever need extra safety with your Realme 7 Pro.

Design, build, handling

Our first impression of the Realme 7 Pro was quite pleasant - it is reasonably sized, thin, and lightweight. It is also a phone with a good grip right out of the box - something we rarely experience these days.

We think of the 6.2"-6.4" bunch as the middle ground between compact and large handsets and we definitely liked the feel with the 7 Pro and its 6.4" OLED screen. Add the frosted back and sharp grippy frame and we are already hooked.

Realme 7 Pro review

So, the Realme 7 Pro has a pretty traditional build - a flat Gorilla Glass 3+ keeps the screen safe, there is nicely shaped plastic frame with matte finish, and a multi-layered plastic back with lovely frosted coating.

The back looks and feels like glass, but it is a plastic piece and thus provides a bit more grip than what a glass would. The frosted back is as massive fingerprint magnet though and the smudgy mess is a guarantee in mere minutes.

The Realme 7 Pro is a bit shorter than the 6 Pro and it is 20g lighter and if you've handled both - you will be able to tell the difference.

Realme 7 Pro review

So, the front of the Realm 7 Pro is where you'd find the fan-favorite Super AMOLED screen. It is a 6.4-inch in diagonal, down from 6.6" on the Realme 6 Pro. It has the same extended 1080p resolution and can do always-on clocks, but it omits 90Hz refresh rate.

Realme 7 Pro review

The notch for the selfie camera is a tiny punch-hole around the top left corner. The previous model had a pill-shaped cutout for the two front shooters, but Realme opted out of such thing for the Realme 7 Pro. Good!

The screen has super thin bezels around the top and the sides. The chin is quite prominent though, but on a such cheap yet powerful phone - you bet we'd be okay with that.

Realme 7 Pro review

There is an optical fingerprint scanner under the screen, and it is as fast as reliable as you'd expect it to be. While its setup may not be the fastest process, it still works conveniently well.

There is one very thin and long grille above the screen - this is your earpiece slash speaker. The hybrid-speaker setup has arrived for the Realme's mid-range and it sounds good.

Realme 7 Pro review

The back of the Realme 7 Pro is a bit curved towards the longer sides and made of plastic. Realme is an incredibly good painter and the 7 Pro is yet another art piece you can show off. We have the Mirror Blue version, the other one is Mirror Silver. Both options offer mesmerizing gradient from darker do lighter hue, which meets its mirrored counterpart just next to the Realme logo.

Realme 7 Pro review

Indeed, the back looks cool, whether it's covered in fingerprints or not.

Also on the back, you'd find the protruding camera setup. It houses the ultrawide and macro snappers (top row), the primary camera (middle), and the depth sensor and the LED flash (bottom row).

Realme 7 Pro review

The Realme 7 Pro has a plastic frame with chamfers that boost the overall grip. On its left side you'd find the tri-card slot and the volume keys, while the power key is alone on the right.

Realme 7 Pro review

The bottom is where you see the 3.5mm jack, the mouthpiece, the USB-C port, and the second speaker.

Realme 7 Pro review

The Realme 7 Pro is a beautiful and comfortable phone. It looks and feels like a flagship, thoughtfully shaped and sized at that.

Realme 7 Pro review

The water-repellent coating adds even more value to the Pro, but we won't rely to much on that - we saw no seals whatsoever around the phone. Still, for a mid-range phone that's priced as low as a budget one, we'd say water-repellent is better than water-nothing and we'd take it.

Display

The Realme 7 Pro packs a 6.4" Super AMOLED of extended 1080p resolution (411ppi) and this is probably the most controversial change since the Realme 6 Pro. See, the 6 Pro had a 6.6-inch 90Hz LCD panel, while the new 7 Pro has smaller 6.4-inch 60Hz OLED.

Realme did not make this decision lightly, though. The maker polled its fans over the social networks, and they voted for a 60Hz OLED instead of a 90Hz LCD. Still, if HRR is a must, the regular Realme 7 model comes with such display - meaning you can still have the 90Hz LCD.

Realme 7 Pro review

So, the Realme 7 Pro screen is protected by a flat piece of Gorilla Glass 3 +.

There is a small punch-hole around the top left corner for the selfie camera. It's a lot better than the pill-shaped cutout on the 6 Pro for the dual-selfie setup and we are glad Realme chose to retire the front ultrawide shooter. It will be missed by a handful of people.

The OLED screen recognized as HDR10 only by YouTube and some DRM-reading apps. Then again Realme never said this is an HDR10-capable screen, we just satisfied our curiosity. The phone supports Widevine L1 DRM, so you will be able to enjoy the maximum video quality across all streaming services.

Realme 7 Pro review

We did our usual brightness measurements and the 7 Pro screen seems to be plenty bright for an OLED. Using the brightness scrubber, we got a maximum brightness of 460 nits. When the screen uses Adaptive Brightness it can light up as high as 585 nits. Sure, we've seen flagships go brighter, but the Realme 7 Pro is no flagship, is it?

Finally, the minimum brightness we were able to achieve with white was 2.4 nits - an excellent result.

The Realme 7 Pro display supports DCI-P3 and sRGB color spaces. You get to choose between Brilliant (oversaturated), Vivid (default, DCI-P3), or Gentle (sRGB) color modes. In each of these, you will get a color temperature slider going from cool to warm.

The default Vivid mode got us an average DeltaE of 4.7 against DCI-P3 targets and maximum deviation of 10.4. If you move the temperature slider midway to Warm, you can get rid of the noticable blue tinge over the white and gray hues and get higher color accuracy with an average DeltaE of 3.9.

The Brilliant Mode is pretty much the same as the Vivid, with more saturated red and green hues.

With Gentle mode, we measured an average DeltaE of 2.9 against sRGB targets.

Overall, color reproduction is good on the Realme 7 Pro and we are happy with what we saw and measured.

Battery life

The Realme 7 Pro is powered by a 4,500mAh battery - up from the 4,300mAh inside the Realme 6 Pro. It also has a different screen than the 6 Pro, but the same Snapdragon 720G chip.

The new screen and the larger battery made a difference in the on-screen tests - the Realme 7 Pro clocked 16 hours on our web browsing test (+2 over the 6 Pro) and 18 hours in looped video playback (+4 over the 6 Pro). Voice calls and standby longevity turned out particularly good, too.

The overall Endurance rating of the Realme 7 Pro then works out to 113h (+6 over the 6 Pro).

Realme 7 Pro review

Our battery tests were automated thanks to SmartViser, using its viSer App. The endurance rating above denotes how long a single battery charge will last you if you use the Realme 7 Pro for an hour each of telephony, web browsing, and video playback daily. Charging speed

The Realme 7 Pro supports the new 65W SuperDart fast charging and the company advertises 50% charge in 12 mins and a full charge in 34 minutes.

Speakers

The Realme 7 Pro has two speakers - one dedicated at the bottom and the other one is the earpiece. The bottom one offers more bass than the earpiece and is a bit louder, but when we played music - the output was balanced enough.

Realme 7 Pro review

So, the Realme 7 Pro scored a Very Good mark as far as loudness is concerned. As for the quality - it's not so good. When compared to Realme 6 Pro - the 7 Pro lacks in bass big time and the output sounds, well, shallow. The high tones are well presented on the 7 Pro, better than on the 6 Pro, but still - the previous model offers richer audio with its single speaker.

Use the Playback controls to listen to the phone sample recordings (best use headphones). We measure the average loudness of the speakers in LUFS. A lower absolute value means a louder sound. A look at the frequency response chart will tell you how far off the ideal "0db" flat line is the reproduction of the bass, treble, and mid frequencies. You can add more phones to compare how they differ. The scores and ratings are not comparable with our older loudspeaker test. Learn more about how we test here.

Android 10 with Realme UI

The Realme 7 Pro boots Android 10 with Realme UI 1.0. The phone supports fingerprint unlock and the optical sensor works very well - it's fast and with high accuracy. You can also add a face for even speedier unlock - though this is not as secure.

Performance and benchmark

The Realme 7 Pro employs the same Snapdragon 720G as the Realme 6 Pro. The SoC uses an octa-core CPU in a 2+6 configuration - 2x2.3GHz Kryo 465 Gold (A76-derivative) cores and 6x1.8GHz Kryo 465 Silver (A55-derivative) cores. It also comes with Adreno 618 GPU

The Realme 7 Pro is available in Europe in just this one configuration - 8GB RAM and 128GB UFS2.1 storage.

We know what to expect, but still - let's run some tests!

Realme 7 Pro review

We start off with the CPU-focused GeekBench - here the Realme 7 Pro inches ahead of every other competitor in single- and multi-core performance and is only bested by the Kirin 810-equipped Huawei.

It's clear the Realme 7 Pro is one capable smartphone, on par with its current competitors in terms of performance and even having an edge if we consider the AMOLED screen. It handles intensive tasks and popular games well. And if a game feels choppy, you can lower its resolution from the Game Space app and thus boost its performance. And for a budget mid-ranger - that's more than enough.

It's a familiar mid-range camera quartet

The Realme 7 Pro features a quad-camera on its back - one that has been quite common across the recent mid-range smartphones. It packs a 64MP primary snapper, an 8MP ultrawide shooter, followed by a 2MP macro cam and a 2MP depth sensor.

The Realme 6 Pro had a 12MP telephoto camera for 2x optical zoom instead of depth sensor and it's a bit of a letdown not to find the same snapper on the newer 7 Pro model. We guess the OLED budget ate that, too.

Realme 7 Pro review

The Realme 7 Pro packs a 64MP primary camera with Sony IMX 682 Quad-Bayer sensor with f/1.8 lens, 0.8µm pixels, and PDAF. This camera shoots by default in 16MP. Night Mode and optional AI Dazzle Color are available.

Second is the ultrawide snapper with an 8MP Hynix HK846 sensor behind f/2.3 lens and 1.125µm pixels. Night Mode and AI Dazzle Color are available, too.

The macro camera is 2MP OmniVision OV02B sensor with f/2.4 aperture, 1.75µm pixels, but lacks autofocus. Finally, there is a 2MP GalaxyCore GC02K0 depth sensor.

The selfie camera has a 32MP OmniVision OV32A1Q Quad-Bayer sensor that sits behind an f/2.5 lens. The focus is fixed.

Realme 7 Pro review

The camera app is the familiar Oppo/Realme one with a few tweaks here for the latest version. There are fewer menus - most of the modes are now on the main rolodex, which is good. It offers AI Dazzle Color (also known as Chroma Boost) - it's like an advanced HDR mode, which may stack several images to offers even further improvements in the dynamic range, but the most prominent "improvement" is the higher color saturation. Sometimes - too high.

In the Expert mode you get to tweak exposure (ISO in the 100-6400 range and shutter speed in the 1/8000s-32s range, 2s for the ultrawide), white balance (by light temperature, but no presets), manual focus (in arbitrary 0 to 1 units with 0 being close focus and 1 being infinity) and exposure compensation (-2EV to +2EV in 1/6EV increments).

Realme 7 Pro review

You do get to shoot on the main and ultrawide cams in this Expert mode but switching them is handled in a truly bizarre way. You get the familiar 1x-2x-5x selector, but that doesn't operate the actual cameras - it's a digital zoom from whichever camera you've picked from the tree selector on the opposite end of the viewfinder. Indeed, the trees switch cameras and once you select a module from there, no focusing distance considerations will auto-switch it - that's good.

Photo quality

The main camera shoots pleasant 16MP photos - the resolved detail is adequate, the white balance - spot on and the colors - true to life. We can also praise the high dynamic range and the excellent contrast. There is some noise visible here and there, but it doesn't get in the way.

The image processing is having a tough time in areas of high intricacy - look at the building's blinds on the fourth photo and the grass, but other than that it produces natural-looking foliage and doesn't go overboard with the sharpening.

While the colors stay true to real life, some may find them a bit anemic at times. That's where AI Dazzle Color comes to help - it will improve the color saturation and may brighten some shadows at the expense of a bit lower contrast.

Shooting at the maximum 64MP resolution is very much and this will show you some extra detail, mostly in foliage. They will also look sharper if you downsize them to 16MP.

Even so, there's a major price to be paid in terms of noise - full-res shots have a lot of it, they do take a while to shoot, and eat up between 15 and 40 MB of space. We'd stick to the 16MP default mode.

The 2x switch on the viewfinder provides digital zoom over the main camera and it's a rather good one. Thanks to the high-res 64MP sensor, the algorithm can do some magic and give you 2x zoomed photo of higher than expected quality. You can still tell it's a digital zoom, but perhaps not right away.

The Realme 6 Pro had a dedicated 12MP tele camera and these 16MP zoomed photos can't make up for its omission on the 7 Pro. But maybe if you downsize them to 8MP then they could be a good match to other budget 8MP tele snappers we've seen. And it's something, right?

And while we are still on the main camera, the Realme 7 Pro also shoots portraits with its 64MP snapper with the help of the 2MP depth sensor. The ones we took turned up with proficient subject detection, convincing background blur, and excellent contrast. We think everyone will be happy with the portrait photos taken with this Realme.

The 8MP snapper with the ultrawide lens does a good job - the detail is okay for such ultrawide purposes, the white balance is accurate, and the colors are often a match to the real ones.

The ultrawide photos are free of noise, which is great. The dynamic range is average at best though, even when the Auto HDR gets involved. But the dynamic is rarely adequate with these types of shooters anyway.

Realme 7 Pro also has a 2MP macro camera, and we snapped a couple of photos. You should be very close to the subject though, precisely 4cm way, and still, the detail isn't that great, and the photos are quite dull.

The night photos from the main 64MP camera are okay, but nothing spectacular for this budget class. There is enough detail, and the pictures aren't blurry. The noise reduction is smart enough not to smears a ton of fine detail, which is nice.

The colors are warmer than they should be, the contrast isn't great, and the exposure is pretty dark even if the camera seems to be shooting at insanely high ISO. We probably shouldn't trust those exifs though - they report incorrect focal length, so why not incorrect ISO as well, right?

We recommend using Night mode in the dark. At the expense of some fine detail and narrower field of view (the photos are cropped to 12MP), you will get much brighter photos. You can easily notice the Night Mode restores many highlights, it exposes some detail in the shadows, too. The colors are better as well - lively instead of washed out.

As we said, the stronger noise reduction (than on the regular photos) wipes out fine detail, but we still prefer the Night Mode pictures. They look great on the phone's screen and in lower resolution on social media platforms.

The Night Mode works on the ultrawide camera and it does a good job in improving the photos at the price of standing still for about 3 to 4 seconds. The images are brighter and have higher dynamic range, there is more captured detail, too. The colors and contrast improve as well and, in the end, if an ultrawide photo is a must - so is the Night Mode.

There is Tripod option of the Night Mode, which triggers a 20 seconds shooting with the main camera and it yields great photos. Those are brilliantly balanced, with excellent color retention, there are stars in the skies, and no highlights were blown in the process. The car tails were removed instead of blurred on the images, which is another thing we like about the algorithm. If you have a tripod and want to take an amazing photo at night, this is the way to go.

You can also shoot in Tripod Night Mode with the ultrawide camera. It takes 10 seconds and the photo isn't as impressive as the one from the main shooter - in fact, we don't think it's worth it over the regular Ultrawide Night Mode.

Selfies

The main selfie camera on Realme 7 Pro has a 32MP Quad-Bayer sensor behind f/2.5 lens. The focus is fixed. The image quality of the selfies is good. The resolved detail is average, but everything else is excellent - contrast, colors, dynamic.

The unsatisfactory resolved detail is because the 32MP sensor is of the Quad Bayer kind. We won't ever get tired of saying that we would have been very satisfied with the 8MP snaps out of this 32MP sensor.

Video quality

The Realme 7 Pro captures videos with its main camera and ultrawide snappers. The main camera records video up to 4K at 30fps and there's 1080p at both 30fps and 60fps. The ultrawide shooter is limited to 1080p@30fps video capturing.

You get the option to choose between the h.264 and h.265 codecs.

The Realme 7 Pro is very generous with the bit rates it uses to encode videos. 4K footage gets 50Mbps while 1080p/30fps is allocated a similarly above average 20Mbps when using the h.264 codec. The audio bitrate is 320kbps, and the sound is stereo.

Unfortunately, the 4K videos are poor in detail and with very limited dynamic range. On a positive note - the white balance and the colors were accurate.

The 1080p footage from the ultrawide camera is average in detail, but with better dynamic range and contrast. The colors are warmer than they should have been, though.

There's no mention of video stabilization in the menus or the viewfinder but Realme mentions EIS within the phone specs. We found that the electronic stabilization works in everything but the 60fps mode.

Wrap-up

The Realme 7 Pro wasn't exactly what we expected it to be - an incremental upgrade over the Realme 6 Pro. We are happy with the OLED switch and the stereo speakers, sure, but some may not be okay with the tradeoffs - the 90Hz refresh and the dedicated telephoto camera are now gone.

Then again, the Realme 7 Pro remains a very capable mid-ranger with an affordable price tag. It offers an incredible screen, design, battery life, and charging. It's got okay performance too, and the photo quality turned out pretty good.

Realme 7 Pro review

But the Realme 7 Pro wasn't meant to upgrade the 6 Pro, obviously. It's more like an expansion of the Realme's budget series, and it does it the right way - you get to keep the reasonable price and get an AMOLED, but a few other things had to go.

If that's not okay with you, the rest of Series 6 and Series 7 will offer you thoughtful alternatives, and there is a good chance you'd find your match there. And if you indeed opt for the 7 Pro or an alternative Realme - it's a win for both sides, and the 7 Pro has done its job.

Alternatives

The Realme 6 Pro costs €50 over the €300 7 Pro and as we said numerous times throughout this review - it offers a 90Hz LCD and a 12MP 2x camera over the 7 Pro.

The Realme X50 shifts the focus towards performance and for some extra €50 over the 7 Pro you can have a 120Hz LCD and more powerful Snapdragon 765 with 5G. The main camera is inferior though - it's a 48MP primary + 8MP ultrawide + 2MP depth + 2MP macro. Its battery and charging speed are less impressive, too.

The basic 4/64 version of the Realme 7 costs €180 and it comes with a larger and 90Hz-capable LCD screen, equally powerful Helio G95 chip and a similar camera even if the primary resolution was lowered to 48MP. The battery on the Realme 7 is larger at 5,000 mAh capacity, but it recharges at "slower" speed with its 30W Dart Charger.

Or you can consider the Realme 6, which is basically the Realme 7 with a 64MP primary camera and a 4,300 mAh battery. It costs about €230.

Realme 6 Pro • Realme X50 5G • Realme 7 (Asia) • Realme 6

The OnePlus Nord is also worth considering, if it fits your budget. The €400 mid-ranger offers a 90Hz Fluid AMOLED of higher quality and with HDR10+ support, a faster and 5G-capable Snapdragon 765G chip and OIS on its main 48MP camera.

There is also the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro, which is a great alternative to the Realme 7 Pro. It has a larger 6.67" 60Hz LCD screen, the same Snapdragon 720G chip, and the same 64MP+8MP snappers on its back. It lacks an OLED panel and stereo speakers, but makes up for that with a very nice price of about €220.

Or if the Poco X3 NFC is available in your country, then this is the one you should be looking for when considering all of the above. It has an IP53-rated body and an incredible 120Hz LCD screen, runs on the new Snapdragon 732G chip, plays audio through stereo speakers, and offers similar camera experience and battery longevity. Its 128GB goes for €250, which is something worth a serious consideration and the X3 is probably the biggest threat to this Realme 7 Pro we have here.

The verdict

The Realme 7 Pro is yet another one of those 'bang for the buck' offers and it's hard to pass. Priced at about €300 the 7 Pro offers a lot of cool features starting with the OLED screen, through the Snapdragon 720G chip, then the good camera setup, and, of course, the blazing-fast 65W charging.

Realme 7 Pro review

The budget mid-range segment is oversaturated though and that's good. Even if a feature or two of the Realme 7 Pro are not to your liking, there is a very good chance you'd find what you are looking for in other Realme phone or in some of its competitors.

Pros

  • Beautiful design, water-repellant coating
  • Great 6.4" Super AMOLED screen
  • Chart-topping battery life and charging
  • Adequate performance
  • Loud enough stereo speakers
  • Very good photo quality
  • NFC, 3.5mm jack, standalone microSD slot

Cons

  • 60Hz refresh rate instead of 90Hz (Realme 6 Pro has 90Hz)
  • No telephoto camera (Realme 6 Pro has one)
  • Underwhelming video recording quality
